Job description

Part Time Preschool Assistant (Seasonal Programs)

Reporting to the Community Recreation Coordinator, the Preschool Assistant is accountable for assisting in the preparation and implementation of a variety of activities (circle time, free play, crafts, etc.) to assigned classes (children up to age 6), in the pre-school area (all locations).

Key Duties

  • Assist in implementing a safe, enjoyable and diversified preschool program in coordination with the Preschool Instructor.
  • Actively involved in leading and implementing scheduled program activities.
  • In accordance with the specific program goals and objectives, deliver a variety of activities (circle time, free play, crafts, etc.) and ensure a high level of quality.
  • Assist in implementing special events and theme days.
  • Promote an environment of safety and respect among participants (co-operation, sharing, positive behaviour) and promote individual growth in developmental areas appropriate to participant age (fine / gross motors skills, speech, etc.).
  • Maintain ongoing effective communications with parents, public, co-workers and Community Recreation Coordinator.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during program hours.
  • Monitor and control access to the program and facilities.
  • Ensure effective public relations and problem solve as necessary.
  • Take appropriate action to deal with incidents, problems and emergencies, as outlined in the departmental / corporate policies and procedures.
  • Provides customer service and recreation education to residents.
  • Responds to and records customer feedback forms in accordance with ISO standards.

Qualifications / Skills

  • Completion of Grade 12 high school diploma is required.
  • Minimum one year experience related to the delivery of recreation programs.
  • Experience working with preschool age children.
  • Excellent organization, time management and planning skills.
  • Self-motivated, positive, confident and approachable.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid Standard First Aid with CPR C.
  • Ableto provide a current Criminal Reference / Vulnerable Sector Check (completed in the last six months) that is satisfactory to the Town.
  • Nice to Have

  • College Diploma or University Degree in Early Childhood Education would be an asset.
  • HIGH FIVE - Principles of Healthy Child Development would be an asset.
  • What is Offered to Staff

  • Rate of Pay : $17.99 - $19.56 per hour.
  • Hours of Work : This is a non-union position that works up to 24 hours per week. The hours of work are Monday to Friday, various shifts between 9 : 00 a.m. - 3 : 00 p.m., as well as Mondays and Fridays between 5 : 00 p.m. – 8 : 00 p.m. and Saturday between 9 : 00 a.m. – 1 : 00 p.m.
