Job description

Unit Summary

The program of research includes a broad portfolio of investigator-initiated research, including clinical trials, observational studies, and mixed-methods and knowledge translation research aimed at improving the care and outcomes of critically ill patients and their families. Working in close collaboration with the PI, research activities span across the full research lifecycle, from study design and ethics approval through participant enrolment, data collection, and dissemination, in close partnership with clinicians, trainees, patients, and family partners with lived experience. The candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and Director of Critical Care Research in the intensive care unit areas at Hamilton General Hospital.

Position Summary

The Research Coordinator will lead the conduct of several research studies within the field of critical care. The Research Coordinator is accountable to the PI and is responsible for all aspects of research projects, including but not limited to:

  • Working with the PI, perform day-to-day activities for multiple critical care projects, including clinical trials and observational studies.

  • Working with a group of stakeholders, including physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers on various research activities.

  • Working with patient and family partners with lived experience on various research activities.

  • Participate in clinical trial start-up activities, including proposal review, ethics board application preparation and submission, stakeholder engagement, as well as development and monitoring of study timelines.

  • Provide coordination and direction in the collection and maintenance of essential site documentation per ICH-GCP guidelines, management and preparation of regulatory and health authority documentation, research ethics board documents and study contact information.

  • Engage in ongoing communication and coordinate regular meetings with key study specific stakeholders.

  • Prepare presentations for external and/or internal meetings.

  • Adhere to all related compliance, safety and monitoring.

  • Prepare all ethics and regulatory documents in accordance with the institution and regulatory and GCP guidelines.

  • Coordinate communication with all internal and external collaborators.

  • Coordinate and lead training of study teams/centers on all aspects of clinical study procedures.

  • Screening of potential participants for several studies and enrolment, including holding consent discussions with patients and/ or their substitute decision makers.

  • Collecting clinical data accurately and efficiently.

  • Supporting qualitative and mixed methods research, including performing interviews and facilitating focus groups with research participants.

  • Performing participant follow-up activities throughout the lifecycle of each project.

  • Act as the primary contact for internal support departments and external stakeholders.

  • Assist with developing and executing various initiatives to promote research across various stakeholders, including among healthcare professionals.

  • Support Principal Investigator(s) in preparation of proposals, grants.

Schedule Work Hours

Temporary full-time (37.5 hours per week)

This position is temporary until August 2027.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Minimum 3 years previous experience in research studies/clinical trials or/other research projects.

  • Working knowledge of ICH-GCP Guidelines and international research requirements.

  • Highly efficient computer skills, extensive experience with the Microsoft office suite.

  • Experience in and comfort with approaching potential participants and/ or substitute decision makers into clinical trials or observational research.

  • Comfort in interacting with vulnerable populations, including family members of critically ill patients and patients who survive critical illness.

  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details and effective time management skills.

  • Able to work collaboratively in a team setting.

Assets

  • Advanced certification as a clinical research coordinator an asset.

  • Experience working in an acute care hospital setting.

  • Experience interacting with patients in a healthcare setting.

  • Experience working on regulated clinical trials.

  • Supervisory experience and team coordination.
