Responsibilities
Assistant duties may occur either virtually, in-person or a hybrid of both depending on the mode of delivery for the course.
Students may be required to hold office hours during the first week of exams.
Work includes, but is not limited to, the following : (breakdown % of duties will be at the discretion of the assigned course professor / supervisor) :
1) Preparation for classes; preparation of written or audio-visual materials; revising and maintaining course related material.
2) Attending lectures.
3) Serving as tutor; leading discussions.
4) Coordinating / leading the work of others (e.g. other GAs / TAs).
5) Holding office hours
6) Consulting with students (including electronic consultation).
7) Assisting in the grading of tests, lab sets, essays and term papers. Proctoring in-class tests, midterms and quizzes.
8) Conferring with the Supervising Instructor; attending mandatory training provided by the Supervising Instructor.
9) Attending employer orientation workshops; attending mandatory employer training.
10) Performing invigilation duties for exams as required.
11) Monitoring discussion board posting and other digital software.
12) Providing academic and technical support during lectures (e.g., via Zoom or D2L).
65.00 Estimated Total Hours of Work
- Actual number of assignments and working hours may vary at offer time dependent on department needs, qualifications and determined rate of pay.
Employees can work up to a maximum of 130 hours per semester or 390 hours per academic year. Employees shall not be guaranteed work and when not on assignment they shall not receive any pay or payment in lieu of benefits.

Orientation and Training
New Assistant hires (first time hires, not first time in a given Faculty) will attend a minimum of 1.5 hours mandatory paid orientation.
New Assistant hires (first time hires, not first time in a given Faculty) will be required to undertake mandatory online training which includes the following : Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Workplace Violence Prevention and Response, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy, Environmental Health and Safety, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Assistants will be assigned four-hour windows to complete this training and these four hours will be included in their contracts.
Assistants will be expected to complete the online training prior to the commencement of their appointment but no later than within two weeks after the start of their contract.
Payment for such training will be effective for New Assistant hires with contracts beginning in the applicable semester.
Qualifications
Previous evaluation of performance as an Assistant at the University (if applicable).
Priority :
Enrolled in : 1st year Graduate Program in the Department of Economics and Toronto Metropolitan University.
Enrolled in 2nd or higher year Graduate Program in the Department of Economics and Toronto Metropolitan University.
Per A.11.2. of the CUPE3 Collective Agreement (https : / / www.torontomu.ca / content / dam / faculty-affairs / cupe-3-collective-agreement / SIGNED_CUPE_3_CA_2021-2023_signed_Updated_Jan_2023.pdf) a Posted Work procedure will follow should the above priority sequence does not fully meet the needs of the Department.
Note : The department reserves the right to hiring on underfill basis when necessary.
Salary & Compensation
January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023
Master - $47.60 per hour
PhD - $50.82 per hour
