Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS) is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for significant waste reduction and environmental sustainability. RMRS operates a recycling depot focused on waste reduction, services Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs, employs individuals with developmental disabilities through an agreement with Community Living BC (CLBC), and provides environmental education and outreach programs to the local community.
In partnership with the City of Maple Ridge, RMRS manages the Maple Ridge Recycling Depot and engages in extensive environmental outreach within schools and the broader community. A cornerstone of RMRS's mission is the employment of individuals with developmental disabilities, facilitating their integration into the community and promoting social inclusion. Through its comprehensive services and commitment to environmental stewardship, RMRS plays a pivotal role in fostering a waste-free and socially responsible community.
It is a time of change at the RMRS. After initiating curbside pick-up of recyclables in 1992 and running the program for 32 years, the RMRS and the City of Maple Ridge are transitioning the operations to Recycle BC, which has developed significant infrastructure throughout the province to serve over 2 million households. The current Depot is aging, has inadequate parking facilities, and is becoming too small to handle the increasing demands driven by new and growing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs. Discussions have begun about its replacement or renovation and it is on the City’s current capital plan. In addition to this, the Executive Director of over 15 years has announced her well-earned retirement. Therefore, RMRS is looking to recruit a new Executive Director who, in collaboration with the Board, will develop a vision for the Society as it embarks on a new era and provide effective leadership across the organization.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will act as the Chief Executive Officer and are responsible and accountable for providing leadership in all aspects, services and activities of RMRS, ensuring the development, implementation and evaluation of the Society’s strategic and operational plans. Priority one for you as the new Executive Director will be to build relationships with the City of Maple Ridge and Metro Vancouver employees and councillors / directors and set the stage to ensure RMRS is positioned to lead the design of and continue to operate the new Depot. You will also need to develop a vision and strategy for the organization going forward, review new EPR programs as they come online to assess their suitability to integrate with existing operations and lead the team to continue to deliver services at a high level. It will also be critical for you to work with Community Living BC to ensure the ongoing successful partnership that currently provides employment to about 20 people with disabilities. This partnership has been highly valued by the Community, City and Province for years.
As the ideal candidate, you will have a minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience in a not-for-profit organization, preferably with exposure to recycling, Extended Producer Responsibility programs, waste management, or other industries with strong parallels. You will have demonstrated the ability to work with and influence multiple levels of government to ensure the best interests of their organization are clear and compelling. You should also bring strong financial acumen, exposure to progressive labour and employee relations and the proven ability to collaboratively develop a vision for an organization. Experience working with Community Living BC or other organizations with parallels will be considered a significant asset.
The compensation for this post is $123,000 plus 5% RSP, vacation and benefits.
