Job description

Description

Are you passionate about harnessing the power of quantum science build things that work? Do you thrive on designing and optimizing qubit architectures for scalability and performance? Do you have expertise in developing spin-system models to predict behavior and communicate requirements to engineers?

Photonic is seeking a Senior Quantum Systems Engineer to join our team! In this role, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and scaling up our quantum systems based on T centres in silicon. You will leverage your deep understanding of quantum science and engineering principles to design, model, and integrate complex quantum systems, ensuring they meet performance requirements while minimizing risk.

In this position, you will apply your expertise in quantum systems engineering to inform architectural decisions, design scalable solutions, and develop detailed system models to guide development efforts. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including scientists, product engineers, and software developers, to derive system-level requirements from simulations and lab data.

Please include a cover letter with your resume (in one file) describing how you would be a great fit at Photonic and what attributes you could bring to our growing team.

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO

Drive qubits to the highest possible quality at scale by :

  • Using a systems engineering approach to architect the spin control path end-to-end, translating unmet needs into actionable requirements
  • Modeling radio frequency and microwave signal paths to meet system level requirements
  • Leading the feedback loop on spin control via classical inline monitors (fiducials) and quantum gateset tomography with the Photonic qubit development, nanofabrication, hardware, software, and modelling teams to accelerate progress
  • Defining and implementing test plans to integrate spin control subsystems
  • Contributing to patents and peer-reviewed articles reporting advances where applicable

WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR TEAM

  • Masters or PhD in Experimental Quantum Information, Physics, Engineering, or related field
  • Systems engineering or architecture background, especially as related to quantum computing
  • 3+ years of academic and / or industry experience in physics, quantum computing and / or systems engineering
  • Deep experience with cryogenic radio frequency and microwave system design and modeling
  • Familiarity with one or more quantum computing platforms (e.g. ion traps, neutral atoms, defect centres, solid-state spins, superconducting qubits)
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to new situations in rapidly changing R&D environment
  • Familiarity with semiconductor synthesis of signals would be a bonus
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve engineering and physics problems
  • Outstanding teamwork skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to relocate and work on site within the greater Vancouver, BC, Canada area (work permit support can be provided)
  • WHY YOU SHOULD WORK WITH US

  • Get involved with a quantum startup company set to redefine computing
  • Work closely with some of the brightest innovators in quantum technologies
  • Enjoy a fast-paced and fun environment where you can try new things while solving innovative challenges every day
  • Inclusive company culture
  • Competitive salary, benefits (including life insurance, extended health, dental, long term disability, and a flexible spending account), and potential upside
  • The description above is what we think an ideal candidate would look like for this role. At Photonic, we understand that everyone has a different work and life journey.
