JOB SUMMARY :

This position provides oversite of projects and support to the Project Director (Principal Investigator) and the project team in all aspects of a research project focused on youth mental health. This is a multifaceted research position that combines administrative responsibilities with research activities. This position will be involved in activities related to a research study in the area of mental health. This position will be given directions to follow by the Principal and / or co-Investigators in activities related to a research study. This position will perform specific assigned research related tasks which includes developing and writing novel protocols, and safety procedures. Will also include managing and overseeing daily operations and finances of the youth mental health lab. This position will also lead group analysis of data, assists in preparation of grants, ethics application, summary reports and publications.

WORK PERFORMED :

Works in co-operation with members of the research team and following research ethical protocol in :

  • Develops and writes novel protocols and safety procedures.
  • Troubleshoots complex equipment and systems problems.
  • Manages and oversees the daily operations and finances for the youth mental health lab
  • Oversees the progress of projects and participates in complex research activities (e.g. coordinating participant recruitment and data collection, organizing, maintaining, and interpreting data.)
  • Provides instruction and training in data collection to team.
  • Writes reports and assists in writing ethics and grant applications.
  • Supervises, schedules and trains staff and may make recommendations with respect to hiring and providing input into staff performance.
  • Perform other related duties as required

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR / IMPACT OF DECISIONS :

Errors in the this position’s work will hold consequences for the timeliness and quality of the research project.

DECISION MAKING / ACCOUNTABILITY :

Exercises a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and coordinating the work of the unit.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED :

Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED :

May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications and may have input into staff selection and performance evaluation.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Work will be performed at the UBC Okanagan where access to telephone, computers, office furniture and other necessary equipment will be provided. Work can also be completed from home.

ORGANIZATIONAL CHART :

This position is not related to any other position in the immediate operating unit.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE :

  • Graduate level degree (Social Work, Psychology)
  • A minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Clinical experience working with youth and families with mental illness
  • Experience in conducting research with youth and families with mental illness
  • Lived experiences as a person with mental illness is an asset
  • Education / training in qualitative and quantitative methodologies required
  • Policy Statement Tutorial will be required.
  • SKILLS :

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills (ability to set priorities and deal with multiple tasks)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with direction, independently and within a team environment to meet deadlines
  • Computer skills : Word, Excel, power point, data software etc.
