Are you passionate about environmental science and protecting our community’s water systems? The City of Brockville is seeking an Assistant Abatement / Laboratory Technician to play a key role in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations while supporting daily operations. This is an exciting opportunity to combine hands‑on laboratory work with field activities, all while contributing to a cleaner, safer environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and test samples (Wastewater Pollution Control Centre processes, leachate, abatement and compliance).
  • Record and communicate test results accurately.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents and maintain supplies.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of lab equipment.
  • Support QA / QC programs, including instrument standardization and control charts.
  • Conduct non‑routine sampling and field observations.
  • Assist with sewer use monitoring programs and abatement enforcement.
  • Maintain orderly records of sampling and compliance actions.
  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Qualifications

  • Two‑year diploma in Environmental Science or related field.
  • Water Quality Analyst certificate or a willingness to obtain.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a related field.
  • Knowledge of spectrophotometry, pH measurement, dissolved oxygen meter, microbiology, vacuum filtration, solution chemistry and preparation.
  • Knowledge of maintaining quality assurance and quality control (QA / QC) program, including instrumentation standardizations, calibrations and control charts.
  • Proficient with MS Office and working knowledge of Watertrax.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
