JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of  Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee.

The Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee, once qualified as a Hydroelectric Operating Technician, will have the opportunity to contribute to Ontario Power Generation by carrying out and overseeing operating activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of equipment, generators and control dams. The Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee is trained to recognize abnormalities, inefficiencies and hazards; and to analyze, troubleshoot and take corrective action.

The Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee Program is two years in length and requires the selected candidates to complete both classroom and field training activities and gain on-the-job experience working in a control centre and inside the generating station. The Hydroelectric Operating Technician Trainee will be required to pass multiple classroom training assessment exams plus a final exam in order to become a Hydroelectric Operating Technician.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Work on a rotating or day shift basis, carrying out operating and monitoring activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of equipment, generators, control dams, storage facilities, and auxiliary systems.
  • Recognize abnormalities, inefficiencies, and hazards in operations; analyze, troubleshoot, and take corrective actions to resolve problems.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of yourself and others, in compliance with technical and operating procedures and standards, while developing solutions to operational problems.
  • Communicate and coordinate with internal and external organizations to ensure compliance with all policy, procedural, and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement good housekeeping, emergency preparedness, and fire prevention practices to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Participate in processing, coordinating, and scheduling equipment outages that impact facility operations, and recommend solutions to planning and scheduling issues caused by unplanned events.
  • Participate in controlling various watersheds, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, social, and environmental constraints and limits.
  • Perform work protection code (WPC) activities as trained, act as a controlling / issuing authority for assigned equipment, and prepare reports and documentation for audit / reference purposes.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-Year post-secondary diploma in Electrical, Hydraulics, or Power Generation area of study, or 2-Year post-secondary diploma plus minimum two years’ operating experience working in a hydroelectric or other power plant setting.
  • Experience in operating, electrical, or mechanical trades, with a solid understanding of systems and equipment.
  • Strong written and oral communication abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, able to handle multiple demands in a control room environment and respond quickly to varying situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow governance, procedures, and guidelines with a critical, analytical mindset.
  • Willingness to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and ability to travel during the two-year trainee program.
  • Experience in a control room environment and with SCADA systems, along with knowledge of hydroelectric generators, protection systems, or governor control systems being considered assets.
  • The successful candidate will exhibit uncompromising integrity and commitment to upholding corporate values, and the OPG Code of Business Conduct.

OPG is committed to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and accessible environment. If you require accommodation during the application or interview process, please contact [email protected] .

What makes a career at OPG different?

With operations across Ontario and the United States, OPG is one of the most diverse power producers in North America. As the largest generator in Ontario, we meet approximately 50% of the province’s electricity needs, largely from low-carbon sources like nuclear and hydro.

As we work to achieve our vision of Electrifying life in one generation , OPG and our family of companies are also helping advance the development of new low-carbon technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), refurbishment projects, and electrification initiatives to help power the growing demands of a growing economy. Join OPG and make history.

Please submit your application  online at jobs.opg.com .  OPG thanks all those who apply; however, only candidates considered for an interview will be contacted.

    LI-Onsite

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods. Maintaining a high-performance culture and excellence is a core expectation of every member of our leadership team and is rewarded through the established compensation framework.

OPG is committed to employment equity. As such, we encourage applicants from equity-seeking communities (Indigenous Peoples, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and women). We strongly believe that alleviating the under-representation of equity-seeking individuals will create a stronger OPG team and allow us to better serve the needs of our diverse communities.

In order to fulfill the above-mentioned purpose, priority in hiring may be given to qualified persons who self-identify as a member of equity-seeking groups as identified in the application process. This initiative constitutes a special program under the Human Rights Code / Canadian Human Rights Act.
