Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre, University of Toronto Mississauga– Writing Instructor

Nature of the assignment: The Writing Instructors at the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre support students individually and in small groups on university writing (e.g., genre conventions, reasoning, organization, style, and language use).

Assignment description: Instructors will meet with undergraduate and graduate students to discuss and provide feedback on academic writing assignments from a variety of disciplines (e.g., Forensic Science, Anthropology, Computer Science). Instructors will work with students individually and in small groups during appointment and drop-in sessions. Instructors may also be asked to deliver group instruction (e.g., workshops) on academic writing.

Estimated number of positions available: 8

Hours of Work (per position): 60 to 100 hours – subject to change

Schedule Information:

Instructors’ duties will include a combination of in-person writing appointments, in person drop-in Writing Studio, online synchronous, and online asynchronous instruction during the RGASC’s opening hours (Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm). In-person appointments will be held at the UTM Campus. The RGASC uses the WCONLINE platform for appointments. Paid training is mandatory for all instructors who have not received training in the past four months. Training will be held in the first two weeks of September.

Sessional Dates of Appointment: 1 September 2026 – 30 April 2027 (Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 semesters)

Salary:

$56.46/hour (Writing Instructor 1)
$60.69/hour (Writing Instructor 2)
$62.48/hour (Writing Instructor 2 – Priority)

All positions are subject to budgetary approval. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A PhD degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Applied Linguistics, Communication, English, Education) with strong writing and oral communication skills.

• Relevant experience teaching writing in one-on-one or small group settings or experience teaching university-level courses with a writing component.

• A demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience in a writing centre

• Experience in teaching English Language Learners at the university level

• Experience with STEM writing
