General Practice Oncologist
The R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre (RSMDRCC) is seeking General Practice Oncologist to join our dedicated team of oncologists and hematologists in outpatient cancer care. We are seeking a colleague interested in 0.6-0.8 FTE position (supporting up to 8 half day sessions per week).
RSMDRCC is a well-integrated highly regarded cancer centre in Ontario and provides comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer management to a population of approximately 1.6 million people. Our medical oncology disease sites include gastrointestinal, lung, breast, gynecological, skin and genitourinary cancers, with plans for additional sites in the future. Our hematologists provide care for all hematological malignancies as well as benign diagnoses and our strong radiation program provides SBRT, SRS external-beam radiotherapy, and brachytherapy. Our Centre hosts the Central East Thoracic surgical oncology program, and is a Gynecology Oncology Centre.
There is an active regional program and the successful candidate would provide outpatient care of oncology patients in one of our ambulatory clinics located at our PRHC partner hospital (Peterborough Regional Health Centre), together with specialist groups of physicians, nurses, and other allied healthcare workers.
The General Practice Oncologist works closely with our team of medical oncologists and hematologists, and responsibilities will include patient assessment and supervising the delivery of systemic treatments including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and supportive medications; assessment and monitoring response to treatment and management of toxicities; assessment of post treatment follow-up patients and utilization of appropriate investigations as needed; and referral of patients to supportive and as necessary, palliative care.
The successful applicant must be registered for independent practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and have a valid OHIP billing number. Experience working with oncology patients would be an asset but is not essential as practical training will be provided if required. Remuneration is based on a guaranteed, competitive salary and includes paid vacation time. On-call coverage is not a requirement for this position.
The Central East Regional Cancer Program
There is a single medical staff group delivering oncology care at the following locations of the Central East Regional Cancer Program : Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC), Northumberland Hills Hospital and Durham Regional Cancer Centre (DRCC) at Lakeridge Health supporting the goal to provide care as close to home as possible. Recruitment and medical leadership for this model is at the DRCC. The services provided by these clinics include consultation assessment, systemic treatment delivery and follow-up / continuing care. Radiation treatment is also provided in PRHC for selected patients. There are clinics 5 days per week which are mainly staffed by oncologists visiting from Oshawa although some oncologists work exclusively in PRHC.
PRHC is a regional hospital delivering acute healthcare to a rapidly growing population of more than 300,000 in Peterborough and the surrounding communities, including the First Nations of Curve Lake, Alderville and Hiawatha. The Health Centre is located in Peterborough Ontario, a 90-minute drive north-east of Toronto – and has a proud local history extending back over a century. We are the region’s largest employer with more than 2,500 staff, 400 physicians with privileges and 500 volunteers.
In Peterborough, you’ll be as close to the great outdoors as you are to work, schools and other amenities. Cottage country is as close as 20 minutes away. An hour south of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park and a couple of hours from Algonquin Provincial Park. Here, we boast all the conveniences and comforts that an exceptional quality of life demands. Here, you can have it all. Just 90 minutes from downtown Toronto by car, Peterborough is a unique community unto itself, an established entity with a rich heritage, a thriving culture, and a bright future. Home to Trent University and Fleming College as well as a burgeoning business sector, the opportunities here abound. Peterborough offers a unique blend of outdoor pursuits and urban amenities right at your doorstep. Our arts and culture community is renowned for its exceptional events, exhibitions and performances, and the city offers a wide array of multicultural cuisine, local cafés, and unique shops.
