BC Cancer – Prince George

Prince George, BC

Join the BC Cancer team as a Medical Oncologist in the heart of British Columbia.

Prince George welcomes you with a small-town vibe, big-city amenities, and a strong sense of community, all with a cost of living roughly 30% lower than other British Columbia cities. Enjoy a thriving cultural scene, shopping, restaurants, breweries, a winery, exciting nightlife, and outdoor recreation fun, including access to stunning mountains, 1600 lakes, and extensive hiking and biking trails. Travel is easy through the Prince George’s international airport, with direct flights to major Canadian cities and international destinations, as well as access to Highways 16 and 97. This city offers an affordable and community-oriented lifestyle, welcoming those seeking both adventure and a close-knit environment.

BC Cancer - Prince George is a full-service cancer centre that serves 1100+ new patients annually, and offers a full range of services in Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and support services such as nutrition, clinical trials, and patient and family counseling. We are proud to host an in-house Research and Clinical Trials Unit, which conducts national and international level radiation trials. We work closely with the University Hospital of Northern BC, a tertiary hospital within Northern Health, and with the UBC Northern Medical Program that offers excellent opportunities for teaching.

We are looking for a Medical Oncologist to be a part of our collaborative team. Our successful applicant will use their extensive experience and qualifications to provide oncology consultation, patient care, teaching, and research while working with a team of specialized medical oncologists at the centre, participating exclusively in the care of oncology patients.

Applicants must be eligible for licensure in British Columbia and must have obtained their Fellowship in Internal Medicine, along with a certificate of Special Competence in Medical Oncology from the RCPSC (or hold an equivalent qualification) by the time of appointment. The successful applicant will receive a clinical appointment with the Division of Medical Oncology in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, and will have privileges through both the Provincial Health Services Authority and our partner health authority, Northern Health, at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia. Canadian Immigration regulations accord preference to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants.

BC Cancer is proud to offer a moving expense allowance, and our Prince George centre is supported by the Rural Retention Program which offers several other annual benefits (conditions may apply) :

  • Rural Premiums – 12.6% (~$54,000) + flat fee (~$19,000)
  • Rural Recruitment Incentive Fund - $15,000
  • Rural CME funding :

$600 - Year 1 & 2

  • $3,600 - Year 3 & 4
  • $6,600 - Year 5+
  • Loan forgiveness options may also apply.

Successful candidates will also have :

  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
  • To apply, please send a letter expressing your interest along with your curriculum vitae to :

    Shelley Dutchin

Applications will be reviewed immediately and the positions will remain open until filled.

PHSA and BC Cancer are committed to equity in our hiring and employment practices. With learning and compassion, we are addressing existing inequities and barriers throughout our systems. PHSA is seeking to create a diverse workforce and to establish an inclusive and culturally safe environment. We invite applications and enquiries from all people, particularly those belonging to the historically, systemically, and / or persistently marginalized groups identified under the B.C. Human Rights Code.

One of PHSA’s North Star priorities is to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism, which includes dismantling barriers to health care employment at every level. We welcome Indigenous individuals to apply and / or contact the Sanya'kula Team (Indigenous Recruitment & Employee Experience) for support at indigenous.employment@phsa.ca .

Indigenous-specific anti-racism initiatives are rooted in addressing the unique forms of discrimination, historical and ongoing injustices, and marginalization faced by Indigenous peoples. These initiatives align with an Indigenous rights-based approach, recognizing the inherent rights and self-determination of Indigenous communities. PHSA must uphold legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents such as including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan : A First Nations Case Study.
