Job description

POWERLINE TECHNICIAN or APPRENTICE

1 Full-Time Position Available in Iroquois Falls)

One full-time vacancy currently exist with the General Utilities Department (NOW Inc.) in Iroquois Falls.  General Utilities provides contractual services to Northern Ontario Wires Inc. Northern Ontario Wires Inc. maintains a regional infrastructure in the communities of Cochrane, Iroquois Falls and Kapuskasing that safely and reliably delivers electricity to homes, schools, businesses and other facilities in these communities. This includes delivering and maintaining poles, wires, and underground cables; responding to emergencies; tracking energy usage; and providing monthly customer billing.

Qualifications :

  • Grade 12 diploma.
  • Red Seal Certification as a Powerline Maintainer or currently registered as an apprentice.
  • Shall possess and maintain a valid Class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with a Class “Z” endorsement.
  • Shall be thoroughly familiar with the Company’s equipment, standards and practices, applicable to this type of work.
  • Shall have demonstrated a history of safe work practices and a full understanding of work protection code.
  • Bilingualism is an asset (French and English)
  • Must be able to carry out the physical work demands of the classification.
  • Operation of specific aerial devices and tools.
  • Must be able to work at heights, climb poles and work in inclement weather.

Basic Position Outline :

  • Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor.
  • Perform live line work on the distribution system.
  • Install hydro / telephone poles, transformers etc.
  • Install high voltage wire and cable.
  • Perform meter reading, meter installation (residential / commercial)
  • Perform service upgrades for residential and commercial.
  • Be able to work in a team environment to ensure the delivery of a high standard of customer service.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with all relevant legislation, safety regulations and other requirements to which the Company subscribes or is obligated to enforce.
  • Perform streetlight maintenance and installation.
  • The successful candidate is expected to maintain residency at a location permitting not more than a 30-minute response time (including inclement weather) to NOW facilities.
