Visiting Assistant Professor in Legal Studies
Salary range :
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. A reasonable estimate for this position is $80,000-$90,000.
Percent time : Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start :
July 1, 2025, with academic year beginning September 2025. Degree requirements must be completed by August 31, 2025.
Position duration :
Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description
The Legal Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Legal Studies.
Under the direction of the Legal Studies Program Director, the Visiting Assistant Professor will teach four undergraduate courses across three quarters, mentor students, and contribute to research and service in the Program. The UC Santa Cruz Legal Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate major, administered by the Politics Department, which seeks to integrate the study of law and legal issues through the contributions and insights of many diverse fields of study in the social sciences and humanities.
While the specialization is open, we welcome candidates whose education, professional activities, and teaching combine law and policy from a comparative or international perspective, or with a focus on the United States. We welcome candidates who will contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other duties.

- Ph.D. in legal studies, law, law and society, political science, or a related field; and / or a J.D. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered. It is expected the degree will be completed by August 31, 2025.
- Demonstrated record of teaching that includes a minimum of one year of college-level teaching (three quarters or two semesters) in legal studies, law, law and society, political science, or a related field.
- Professional record of accomplishments that includes publications; grants; awards; fellowships; organizing workshops; and / or participation in conferences, workshops, or summer schools.
