BC Housing is seeking an Indigenous Law Lawyer to support its work in advancing reconciliation and addressing Indigenous housing needs. This role involves advising on Aboriginal and Treaty rights matters, including the development and implementation of strategies to resolve historical land-related grievances. The successful candidate will foster and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous governments, organizations, and businesses, ensuring BC Housing remains a trusted partner in developing and operating housing in Indigenous communities.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Provide legal advice on Aboriginal and Treaty rights matters, including historical land-related grievances and Indigenous partnerships.
Support the development and implementation of negotiation and litigation strategies for resolving Indigenous claims.
Collaborate with Indigenous governments, organizations, and businesses to foster partnerships in housing development and operations.
Advise on compliance with laws and regulations affecting Indigenous housing initiatives.
Develop frameworks and policies that prioritize reconciliation and address systemic barriers impacting Indigenous communities.
Education and Professional Skills / Knowledge
Law Degree (LL.B or J.D.) and membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia (or eligibility within three months).
Strong knowledge and in-depth understanding of First Nations legal issues, including treaties, land claims, governance, and Indigenous legislation.
Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities on legal matters.
Commitment to reconciliation and advancing equitable housing solutions for Indigenous populations.
Compensation ranges from $, to $,, depending on experience.
