Job description

Role Summary

We are seeking a VDC Designer to join our team in the West!! The VDC Designer develops engineering consultant designs into coordinated, fabricable, and installable virtual models using Revit and BIM technologies. This role optimizes system routing, ensures code compliance, improves constructability, and supports project execution across multiple mechanical disciplines.

Why This Role Matters to Modern Niagara

VDC Designers are key to delivering accurate, build‑ready models that reduce field rework, improve installation efficiency, and enhance project predictability. Their technical expertise strengthens collaboration with project teams, supports trade coordination, and drives Modern Niagara’s competitive advantage in virtual construction.

Key Impact / Purpose

  • Transform engineering consultant designs into coordinated virtual models that accurately represent final site installation.
  • Optimize routing for efficiency, cost reduction, constructability, and adherence to applicable codes and standards.
  • Support project teams through proactive coordination, clash resolution, and alignment with project strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Model 3D building systems to enhance consultant concepts, including QA/QC for at least one discipline.
  • Ensure design outputs meet code requirements, reduce material and labour costs, and support efficient installation.
  • Issue complete drawing packages (PDF/paper) to site teams, including QA/QC verification.
  • Maintain updated drawings and documentation in project databases.
  • Improve project profitability and competitiveness through effective use of VDC technologies and timely deliverables.
  • Oversee fittings libraries and report discrepancies to the VDC Manager.
  • Prepare final drawings and sketches, verifying dimensions, materials, and system relationships.
  • Perform calculations for angles, tolerances, clearances, weights, layouts, and opening locations.
  • Work cross‑functionally to align design development with project schedules.
  • Develop workflows bridging CAD to CAM to streamline fabrication and installation processes.
  • Collaborate closely with the VDC Project Lead and Project Superintendent to ensure coordinated, strategy‑aligned outputs.

Must haves:

  • 3+ years of Revit experience on mechanical projects (preferred).
  • Post‑secondary diploma in Mechanical or Construction Technology or a related field.
  • Experience in mechanical contracting trades (HVAC, plumbing, piping, sheet metal).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and documentation.
  • Experience within construction, engineering, manufacturing, or related technical environments.
  • Strong problem‑solving abilities using design tools and virtual construction technologies.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience in Sheet Metal (Duct) Design/Modeling for 3+ years.
  • Experience modelling multiple mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of routing optimization and mechanical codes.
  • Familiarity with CAM workflows or fabrication‑integrated modelling.

This is a new position. Expected annual compensation; $70,000 - $90,000.

Modern Niagara offers a competitive total compensation package including:

  • Performance based bonus opportunities.
  • Defined Contribution Pension Plan with a generous employer contribution.
  • Flexible Health and Dental benefits with tiered options to meet the needs of you and your family.
  • An annual health spending account to support your overall wellness.
  • 24/7 confidential support through our Employee and Family Assistance Program with access to comprehensive resources and professional services.
  • A competitive vacation package with additional vacation granted throughout your tenure with the organization.
  • Employer Paid Parental Leave Top Up.
  • Annual Community Day dedicated to volunteering and giving back to the communities where we live and work.
  • Corporate Discounts through various vendors across Canada for programs such as fitness, mobile phones, travel, home and auto insurance and many others.
  • Here at Modern Niagara, because we know our people are the best in the industry, we pride ourselves on providing a total compensation package that rewards employees for their hard work and supports employees and their families in their overall wellbeing.
