Job descriptionGuideproject teams in the integration of specifications throughout all projectphases to support design integrity and technical excellence. Supportthe development of design briefs to ensure alignment between clientvision, performance objectives, and material systems. Participatein pre-tender reviews and assist in construction administration tasksincluding RFI responses, submittals, and change documentation to ensureadherence to specifications. Workcollaboratively with teams across offices to ensure consistent technicalstrategies and specification implementation. Maintaina regularly updated blacklist of unsustainable or non-compliant materialsin alignment with the firm’s environmental performance goals. Ensureall work aligns with the firm’s Project Delivery standards, includingproper use of filing systems, adherence to architectural procedures, andcompliance with drawing and documentation protocols. Mentorand educate project teams on the importance of well-crafted specificationsand how they enhance project quality, risk mitigation, and designcontinuity. Maintainand manage the firm’s material library, ensuring accessibility toup-to-date samples and performance information across studios. Activelyengage with manufacturers and industry representatives to stay informed ofemerging products, systems, and technologies. Fostera collaborative, detail-oriented, and accountable team environmentgrounded in professional growth, sustainability, and technical leadership. Ableto work in a collaborative, in-office environment (100% in-office presencerequired at any Zeidler Canadian Offices) to support direct teamengagement and effective cross-functional coordination). Minimum10 years of architectural specification writing experience across variedproject types and scales. Strongknowledge of Canadian building codes, materials, and constructionpractices. Provenability to produce comprehensive and coordinated specifications acrossdesign phases. Familiaritywith sustainable design, healthy material selection, and LEED / greenbuilding certification frameworks. Experiencewith tendering, procurement, and contract administration. Excellentwritten and verbal communication skills with a mentorship mindset. Proficiencyin specification writing software; familiarity with BIM platforms (e.g.,Revit) is an asset. CSC(Construction Specifications Canada) or CSI (Construction SpecificationsInstitute) membership or certification is preferred. We are currently seeking a Specifications Writer to join ourNational Team.
Job Summary
The Architectural Specifications Writer is a technical andstrategic contributor responsible for developing and maintaining high-quality,standardized specifications that support excellence in project delivery acrossall Zeidler studios. This role guides teams through all project phases,ensuring specifications reflect current industry standards, sustainablepractices, and client requirements. The position requires deep knowledge ofmaterials, codes, and procurement practices, and plays an essential mentorshiprole in promoting consistency, quality, and innovation across the firm.
Key Responsibilities
Design + Documentation
- Develop andmaintain up-to-date, firmwide master specifications tailored to projecttypes and aligned with current industry and sustainability standards.
- Author, review,and coordinate project-specific specifications from schematic designthrough construction documentation.
- Research andimplement innovative, high-performing, and sustainable materials andsystems in coordination with design teams.
- Ensure allspecifications comply with applicable codes, contract requirements, andfirm QA / QC standards.
- Create and manage specdevelopment schedule to meet multiple demands for various projectsimultaneously.
