Executive Producer, CBC Sudbury (English Services)

Position Title : Executive Producer, CBC Sudbury (English Services)

Status of Employment : Contractee Long-Term (Fixed Term)

Position Language Requirement : English

Language Skills : English (First Official Language), English (Reading), English (Speaking), English (Writing)

Your role

We are looking for a creative, dynamic person to lead the team at CBC Sudbury as Executive Producer for News and Current Affairs . This is a one-year contract.

You love current affairs radio and breaking news. You want to drive the news agenda in Sudbury and northeastern Ontario. You’re comfortable telling stories on multiple platforms – radio, digital print, social, video, podcast – and you know the nuances that make a story sing on each medium.

You are an innovative thinker who’s willing to experiment to help us reach new audiences wherever they are, whenever they need us. You think strategically : you can set direction and delegate effectively. But you aren’t afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work. You understand that daily news can be a flat-out sprint to deadline, with a myriad of complex decisions to make along the way. You know how to balance out the daily demands with longer-term projects.

You champion team success and find creative solutions when issues arise. The people who work on your teams know what you expect of them. You are a strong motivational leader, capable of managing people as well as complex journalistic and legal situations. Your work – and that of your team – adheres to CBC journalistic policies, standards and practices.

You are a strong communicator. Your ability to build relationships helps ensure the success of your teams and the station alike. You are committed to building the skill set of each person on your team. You thrive on creating an inclusive environment, both within our storytelling and on our team.

You put audience needs at the centre of your decision-making. You understand the role of the public broadcaster in building a stronger local community and in building a stronger Canada. You are committed to growing our relationship with the audience – particularly communities that have been underserved and underrepresented – and telling stories that are relevant to them.

You work in partnership with the executive producer of CBC Thunder Bay to harness the collective strengths of both the Sudbury and Thunder Bay teams and find creative and meaningful ways to serve the greater northern Ontario audience.

Key Tasks :

  • Oversee all journalism at CBC Sudbury
  • Lead journalistic staff in strengthening our connections with communities
  • Cultivate relationships with new audiences and community stakeholders, and respond to audience concerns
  • Diversify the range of voices, opinions and creative storytelling the audience sees and hears on CBC Sudbury
  • Strengthen our content through critical thinking and creative vision
  • Coordinate, program and execute special programming
  • Lead staff through a continuously changing media environment with innovation and strategic planning
  • Responsible for resource allocation including budget
  • Make daily staffing and scheduling decisions
  • Help employees to develop through mentoring, ongoing feedback, performance management and providing opportunities for growth
  • Perform all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification

We are looking for a candidate with the following :

  • A university degree or equivalent
  • Ten (10) years’ experience which must involve work in journalism and experience leading program or project teams
  • Strong and demonstrated understanding of traditional and emerging platforms
  • Superior writing, editorial, vetting and production skills. Interest in cross-platform media production
  • A strong team leader with the ability to inspire others
  • Can interpret and adapt to audience trends and data
  • Thorough knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and their applications in a wide variety of contexts
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long term strategic planning
  • Understanding of Sudbury / northeastern Ontario’s political and cultural landscape
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of conflict resolution, mentoring, talent recognition and development
  • A commitment to reflecting community and diversity
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required, including early morning and evening shifts, and weekends.
  • Ability to work within tight timelines, often in unexpected overtime situations
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes :

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
  • CBC / Radio-Canada is committed to being a leader in reflecting our country’s diversity. That’s because we can only create and tell the stories that connect Canadians, by having a workforce that mirrors the ever-changing makeup of our country. That’s why we, as an employer, value equal opportunity and nurture an inclusive workplace where our individual differences are not only recognized and valued, but also extend to and pervade all the services we provide as Canada’s public broadcaster. For more information, visit the Diversity and Inclusion section of our website. If you have accommodation needs at this stage of the recruitment process, please inform us as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

You are invited to consult and familiarize yourself with our Code of Conduct, which can be found on our corporate website. All employees must adhere to the Code as a condition of employment. We also invite you to take a look at our policy on conflicts of interest. In the event that you become an employee, it will be important to inform us, as quickly as possible, of any situation that, because of your hiring, constitutes or could appear to constitute a conflict of interest.
