Journey Person Instrumentation and Controls Technician, Operations and Maintenance

The University of Saskatchewan is one of the top research-intensive universities in Canada. Guided by our University Plan: The University the World Needs, we work together across disciplines and with our communities to find creative solutions to the most pressing global challenges. The main campus also houses our campus partners such as the Royal University Hospital, Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, National Research Council, and others. The total building area is million square feet (754,000 square meters) across 766 hectares of land.

The Facilities team is comprised of over 300 trades personnel and service workers that provide trusted services and stewardship in support of teaching, learning, and discovery. This team is responsible for operations, maintenance, service, utilities distribution, and customer support. The Facilities Team Charter describes the purpose, vision, and values that in turn support the campus community.

The work involves high volume, variety, and complexity, often collaborating with other trades, clients, and contractors in high-pressure situations and adapting to changing divisional needs. Physical challenges include lifting heavy objects, working from ladders or elevated platforms, and operating in crawlspaces, confined spaces, and construction zones. The work environment may include exposure to hazardous materials such as asbestos, free silica, lead, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and carcinogenic substances. Personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, must be worn, requiring the worker to be clean-shaven at all times. The incumbent must be available for on-call emergencies on a rotational basis and may need to adjust shifts to accommodate work requirements.

  • Contributing to the long-term goal of reliability-centered maintenance by assisting in preventative and predictive maintenance schedules and advising maintenance staff on proper equipment operation and care
  • Reviewing and interpreting electronic and paper design drawings to determine work scope and requirements, and preparing estimates
  • Planning work for both shop and field installations to ensure clean and efficient execution
  • Coordinating work with other trades and making recommendations for innovation, improvements, and repairs
  • Procuring materials, promoting outstanding customer service, and supporting workplace initiatives as directed
  • Meeting commitments honestly, respectfully, and consistently
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Education: Grade 12 Education (with no modified classes) or a GED 12

Licenses:

  • Journeyperson Instrumentation Certificate.
  • Electrical Restricted Journeyperson’s License in the Instrumentation Field.
  • Valid Province of Saskatchewan driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Experience: Some experience in construction and maintenance of computer based and pneumatic control systems in commercial/industrial applications and electronic troubleshooting and repair maintenance. Experience in Robert shaw, delta and delta V is an asset.

Skills: Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal and communication skills that enhance the incumbent’s performance of work. Sound trouble shooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills in order to identify maintenance trends, proactively resolve potential problems, and propose recommendations for improvements. Ability to read and interpret technical documents including HVAC and process control schematics; demonstrated proficient computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; proficient skills in the operation of Industrial or Building Automation control systems; demonstrated effective organization and time management skills; proven ability to work on multiple projects with competing demands to meet deadlines; ability to work independently as well as in a team; excellent troubleshooting skills; physical ability to perform heavy physical labour.
