Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

Summer Term B: July 6 – August 21, 2026; Online Asynchronous

The Part-Time Academic will be responsible for teaching a 3000-level lecture course, The Science of Sleep (PSYO/NESC The class is scheduled in an online asynchronous format. The anticipated enrollment is 50 students, and the course comes with a TA90.


PSYO/NESC 3264, The Science of Sleep, reviews the history, methods and results of the scientific study of sleep. Topics include: circadian and homeostatic regulation; developmental and cultural impacts; normal and abnormal function of neural and other control mechanisms; effects of sleep loss on performance and health; theories of the functions of sleep.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include:

  • Developing 7 weeks of content, including lectures, readings, and assessments
  • Preparation and administration of assessments quizzes/exams; assignments)
  • Grading assessments and providing timely feedback to students (in collaboration with the course TA)
  • Being available to answer student questions via email and/or virtual meetings; responding to student emails in a timely manner.
  • Providing course content syllabus, lecture recordings, notes, grades) on Brightspace, Dalhousie’s learning management system.
  • Maintaining a record of all student grades (including grades for each assessment component) in Brightspace, and ensuring timely submission of final letter grades to the registrar’s office (due date: August 26, 2026).

Please note that this summer term does not include a formal exam period. Final exams are scheduled by the instructor within the course dates listed above.

Teaching occasionally requires work after the formal end point of a course (for example, in cases where a student has extenuating circumstances or academic accommodations that require a deferred final exam). If such cases arise, the Part-Time Academic must facilitate tying up loose ends, either by completing the work themselves, or by providing the necessary materials for the department to complete the work on their behalf answer keys; Brightspace access).

This position reports to the Chair of the Department.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

Applicants must have a graduate degree in Neuroscience, Psychology, or a related discipline. They must have teaching, research, and/or science communication experience that involves communicating neuroscientific concepts to an audience with only an introductory-level background in systems neuroscience.

Research or teaching experience in relevant fields is an asset; this may include (but is not limited to) the physiological and behavioural characteristics of sleep, circadian rhythms, and homeostasis in humans and non-human animals. Proficiency with delivery of course content using a learning management system and experience teaching in an online environment (using Brightspace in particular) are considered assets.
