Job description :
Title : Electrician - Domestic and Rural
Location : Ontario
Required hours : 7,200 hours per year of Full time employment
Overview :
An Electrician - Domestic and Rural is a specialized professional who installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems in residential homes and rural properties. This role is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient electrical systems in areas that might have unique challenges compared to urban environments. Whether it’s a newly built home in a rural setting or a historical renovation in a suburban neighbourhood, domestic and rural electricians are key to delivering high-quality electrical services.
Key Responsibilities :
Installation of Electrical Systems :
Install wiring, outlets, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, and appliances in residential homes and rural properties.
Ensure that electrical systems are integrated correctly with other building services, such as heating or cooling systems.
Work on new builds, as well as renovations, rewiring, and system upgrades in older properties.
Maintenance and Repair :
Perform routine inspections of domestic and rural electrical systems, identifying potential hazards or inefficiencies.
Troubleshoot and repair issues related to electrical panels, circuits, fuses, and appliances.
Respond to emergency calls for electrical failures, ensuring prompt and safe repairs to restore power.
Safety and Code Compliance :
Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and any local electrical regulations.
Follow all safety protocols to prevent electrical hazards and minimize risk during installations or repairs.
Stay up to date on the latest safety standards and ensure the electrical systems meet the highest safety and quality benchmarks.
System Upgrades and Energy Efficiency :
Help homeowners and rural property owners upgrade outdated electrical systems to meet modern requirements, including energy-efficient options like LED lighting, solar panel connections, or high-efficiency heating systems.
Recommend and install energy-saving solutions such as smart thermostats, motion sensors, or voltage regulators to help clients save on electricity costs.
Communication and Client Service :
Maintain open communication with clients to explain the scope of work, estimated timelines, and costs.
Provide guidance on electrical safety, use of equipment, and energy-saving tips, ensuring the client is fully informed about their system.
Offer support for on-going electrical needs, including troubleshooting minor issues after the initial installation.
Documentation :
Keep thorough records of work performed, including inspections, repairs, and any upgrades made to systems.
Provide clients with documentation about the work completed and any warranties associated with repairs or new installations.
Skills and Qualifications :
Technical Knowledge :
Strong understanding of electrical systems, including both the practical installation and theoretical principles that underpin them.
Ability to read electrical blueprints, diagrams, and manuals to assess and implement electrical installations and repairs.
Problem-Solving :
Ability to diagnose and solve electrical issues, particularly in residential and rural environments where problems may be less straightforward than in urban areas.
Familiarity with troubleshooting tools such as voltage testers, circuit analysers, and clamp meters.
Physical Stamina and Dexterity :
Ability to perform manual tasks such as climbing ladders, lifting heavy electrical components, and working in confined spaces or attics.
Comfort with working outdoors in varying weather conditions, particularly for rural property installations or repairs.
Safety Awareness :
Knowledge of electrical safety practices, including lockout / tagout procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Ability to work safely in homes with pets or small children, taking extra precautions where necessary.
Customer Service :
Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with clients, provide clear explanations of electrical work, and offer helpful advice.
Ability to establish trust with homeowners and rural clients by providing reliable, friendly, and professional service.
Education and Certification :
Education : A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Most electricians in this field complete a formal apprenticeship program.
Licensing : Many regions require electricians to be licensed. Licensing typically involves passing an exam that covers electrical theory, codes, and safety.
Experience : Experience in residential and rural electrical work is essential. An apprenticeship or several years of hands-on experience will help develop the skills needed for this role.
Working Conditions :
Electricians in this role typically work in residential homes, farms, or rural estates. Depending on the job, they may work in attics, basements, or crawl spaces, and may need to work outside in all weather conditions.
The work schedule is often flexible, but electricians must be available for emergency call-outs, especially in rural areas where electrical outages or issues can be more disruptive.
What We Offer :
Competitive Pay : Competitive salary based on experience and skills.
Career Growth : Opportunities for advancement in a growing industry.
Training & Development : On-going training and certifications to keep you at the top of your field.
Team Environment : A supportive, collaborative work culture with a focus on quality and safety.
Comprehensive Benefits : Health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and more!
