The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Departmental Director, Division of Cardiology. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as a Cardiologist at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The term of appointment is five years, renewable once following a successful review. Effective start date will be Jan 1, 2025.
An aspirational leader is sought to drive change and advance the academic enterprise of the Division of Cardiology over the next five years. The ideal candidate will be an internationally respected scholar and visionary leader with sophisticated interpersonal skills. They will meaningfully engage the academic leadership of the University and the affiliated teaching hospitals to build strong cross-department and cross-discipline collaboration, bridge diverse groups, strengthen capacity in research across disciplines, and provide strong mentorship to trainees and faculty at all stages of career. The individual will establish an overarching vision and strategic direction for the Division. The Director reports directly to the Chair of Medicine.
The Division of Cardiology at the University of Toronto is the largest cardiology division in Canada. It is comprised of over 115 faculty in six teaching hospitals, three cardiac intensive care units and five inpatient ward services. Faculty cover all areas of cardiovascular medicine, including basic, translational, clinical trials, and epidemiologic and health services research, as well as faculty experts in quality improvement, educational research, and administration. The Division consists of international leaders in the clinical care of patients with complex cardiac disorders, the education of future academic and community-based cardiologists and the development of leaders in basic, clinical and epidemiologic cardiac research. The Division is committed to ensuring that residents are fully equipped for academic as well as clinical practice in large and small communities.
The Department of Medicine is one of the largest in North America, with 946 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 sub-specialty divisions located across 6 fully-affiliated hospitals, 4 community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites. The Department of Medicine is research-intensive with $162+ million annual research funding. Applicants must hold an MD degree and be eligible for certification in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure in Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following University fully-affiliated sites : Sinai Health System, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, Unity Health Toronto - St. Michael’s Hospital, or Women’s College Hospital. Estimated total remuneration from all sources will be in the range of $350-450,000 and commensurate with qualifications, experience and clinical work.
