PhD Position – Arctic Snowpack Modeling

Université Laval (Québec, Canada) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on improving the representation of wind slabs in Arctic snowpacks using the SVS2-Crocus model, a key component of Canada’s next-generation hydrometeorological forecasting platform. This project offers an opportunity to work at the forefront of Arctic climate and snow science, in collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada and the French Snow Research Centre.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team and engage in both field and modeling activities aimed at advancing scientific understanding of Arctic snow processes.

Requirements

Master’s degree (MSc) in engineering, physics, environmental sciences, or geography

Experience in data analysis, modeling, or field work (preferred)

Proficiency in programming (Python, R, Matlab, etc.)

Strong motivation, communication, and teamwork skills

Key Responsibilities

Analyze and test snow parameterizations using Arctic snow datasets

Participate in a field campaign in Ikaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay, Canada)

Collaborate with national and international research partners

Work alongside a multidisciplinary team, including another PhD student focusing on water vapor fluxes

Funding And Start Date

Annual funding : 30,000 CAD plus a 3,000 CAD / year bonus and potential teaching contracts

Start date : September 2025 or January 2026
