The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, to foster capital formation, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, and enforcement activities. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

Summary
Reporting to the Manager – Records and Data Governance, the Data Governance Specialist is instrumental in deploying and promoting the data governance program at the OSC. This role emphasizes consistent access and use of data, enhancing the visibility of enterprise data assets, and educating business users on best practices for data management. The role partners with other technology teams to create and implement technology solutions, ensuring the production of highly managed, governed, and trustworthy data assets that support regulatory functions. Additionally, the Specialist plays a crucial role in shaping data governance practices and developing and executing a comprehensive data management roadmap for the organization.
The Data Governance Specialist is responsible for ensuring data quality management, which includes maintaining data accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reliability across the organization. This involves implementing data validation and cleansing processes to uphold high-quality data standards. The role also encompasses establishing robust data security and privacy policies to protect against unauthorized access, breaches, and misuse, ensuring compliance with relevant data protection regulations. Overseeing the entire lifecycle of data, the Specialist guides best practices for data retention, backup, and recovery, ensuring data availability and integrity. Furthermore, the Specialist assigns and manages roles and responsibilities for data stewardship and ownership, holding data stewards accountable for data quality, security, and compliance. Developing and maintaining a comprehensive data governance framework, including policies, procedures, and standards, the Specialist ensures alignment with organizational goals and facilitates effective decision-making related to data management.
