Job Description :
The Interpreter’s primary responsibility is to provide high quality, visual communication for students in a post-secondary setting. The individual will interpret classroom lectures, course- related activities, campus events, or other assignments as directed by Accessibility Services. Adequate preparation, maintaining professional boundaries, and ongoing professional development are critical to the position. Assignments vary according to the type of communication system needed, the technical or unique nature of the subject matter, vocabulary, lecture / class structure and content, the rate of the speaker’s delivery, the need for the student to participate in the instructional setting, and the number of deaf or hard of hearing students being served simultaneously.
Qualifications Required :
Education & Experience
- Completion of Grade 12 and graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program (ITP).
- Four (4) years of recent related experience interpreting in American Sign Language (ASL) and / or oral interpretation and English in an educational setting.
- Post-Secondary Sign Language Screen preferred (applies to sign language assignments).
- Completion of a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree, preferred.
- Experience working within an educational team and interpreting in a “teamed setting”.
- An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
- Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) required.
