Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Educator for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing helps reduce the developmental impact of identified hearing loss for preschoolers and their families residing in Prairie Mountain Health.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overview:

  • Organizes, prioritizes and assumes responsibility for caseload.
  • Applies training knowledge and skill to provide optimum individualized and continuous assessment and treatment for assigned preschoolers who are identified as Deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Provides direct habilitative programming to children enrolled in the program.
  • Collaborates with clients and the family/guardian on the planning, implementation, and progression of the treatment plan, providing education and counseling to the client and family member/guardian.
  • Provides educational and habilitation strategies to families/guardians in order to promote the child’s growth and development.
  • Utilizes evidence-based practice techniques within the scope of this role.
  • Communicates, consults and collaborates with other health care professionals/community team members of the multidisciplinary team in the implementation of the treatment plan.
  • Documents in a timely manner as per Prairie Mountain Health policy and relevant professional regulatory guidelines.
  • Liaises, consults and exchanges verbal and/or written information with external agencies in accordance with relevant policy and legislation.
  • Completes required statistical reporting within established timelines.
  • Collaborates through discussions with management to ensure continuity of services to optimize caseload coverage during periods of absence vacancy, whenever reasonably possible.
  • Works collaboratively with management in proposing, planning and participating in the implementation of services and/or audiology programming.
  • Participates in performance review process and goal setting to enhance work performance.
  • Serves as a public consultant regarding hearing conservation matters through provision of educational materials and instructional in-services.
  • Provides supportive counseling to clients and/or their families/guardian(s) regarding the nature of the identified hearing loss.
  • To provide resources, information, advocacy to and on behalf of clients and their families.
  • To provide information to families/guardians regarding conferences, workshops and service options.
  • To monitor amplification system usage and functioning with those enrolled in the program.
  • Provides staff development, orientation, and consultation for volunteers and health professionals involved in hearing conservation.
  • Participates in community development activities related to hearing and speech promotion.
  • Reports pertinent information to the Therapy Services management in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.
