Job description

Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Geering Up Kelowna Coordinator and Assistant Manager, the STEAM Programming Facilitator supports the development, delivering, and evaluating STEAM programs throughout the Greater Okanagan and Kootenay regions. This hybrid role is based at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna and includes facilitating in-school workshops, clubs, camps, and events. The facilitator will also support the daily operations of the Geering Up Kelowna team to ensure programming is safe, inclusive, and engaging for all participants.

Organizational Status

UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach is an organization dedicated to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) concepts to the children and youth of British Columbia through fun, innovative, and hands-on experiments and projects. Recognizing the systemic barriers that prevent many from pursuing careers in STEAM, Geering Up strives to make its programming inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, culture, or socio-economic status.

Over the past 30 years, Geering Up has reached more than 150,000 youth through summer camps, in-school workshops, outreach trips, clubs, and community events. The UBC Okanagan campus has hosted Geering Up programming for the past 10 years, extending its impact throughout the Okanagan region. More information about Geering Up is available on our .

Work Performed

  • Develop and deliver engaging, age-appropriate STEAM content aligned with curriculum outcomes and funding goals
  • Lead in-person programming including workshops, clubs, camps, and community events
  • Support the leadership and training of seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Ensure all safety and risk management procedures are followed
  • Assist with budget planning and operational logistics
  • Complete evaluations and reporting in a timely manner
  • Lead multi-day outreach trips to communities in the Okanagan and Kootenay regions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Consequence of Error/Judgement

UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach delivers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) outreach programming to children, youth, and teachers across the province of British Columbia. Many of Geering Up’s programs focus on giving underrepresented and marginalized groups access to STEAM education; therefore, ensuring adequate and valid employee qualifications, ensuring accurate training, and addressing employee conflict and other issues is essential both to the integrity of the programs, and the image of the organization.

This position is responsible for data related to financial and reach reporting, errors could result in direct financial loss, credibility, and the institution’s reputation. Inefficient administration could result in delays of appointments, impacting staff payroll.

Minimum Qualifications

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years’ experience working with children or youth, ideally in an educational or camp setting, is an asset

  • Interest or background in STEAM subjects (or willingness to learn)
  • Strong organizational, time management, and self-directed work skills
  • Experience in project or program management is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required
  • First Aid certification is an asset
  • All staff must complete a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check to work with children

What will you learn/develop?

  • First Aid & CPR certification and chemical safety training
  • Hands-on experience teaching STEAM to diverse audiences (K–adult)
  • Professional development in educational technology, classroom management, and EDI (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion)
  • Experience working in a dynamic, mission-driven team environment
