Job description

Job Title : Community Planning Coordinator

Department : Community Programs

Reports to : Executive Director

Hours of work : 10 hours per week

Position Type : This is a part-time fixed-term position starting on January 6, 2025, and ending June 30, 2025, with the possibility of extension.

About HSCA :

HSCA is a charity that operates on the leading edge of community-serving organizations in Calgary. We champion programs and initiatives that strengthen the capacity of residents to have meaningful engagements with each other and the world around them. We are a vibrant community hub - creating welcoming spaces within and beyond our walls, both virtually and in-person; a place where communities of interest, mixed demographics (income, age, backgrounds, ethnicities, newcomers, housing type) converge to participate in a shared sense of community and connection with others. We build collaborative connections with organizations and initiatives to increase our impact, reach, and ensure efficiency of program and service delivery across organizations.

HSCA offers several programs and services which put our mission to preserve and enhance a healthy and vibrant quality of life to the residents of Hillhurst Sunnyside into action. These include childcare, facility rentals, recreation, markets, committees, and a range of community programs.

Position Description :

The Community Planning Coordinator is a part-time (10 hours / week) position. This position provides direct support to the Hillhurst Sunnyside Planning Committee (HSPC) of the HSCA Board. Primary support roles are : administration, communications, urban planning support and advocacy, and organizing meeting activities among stakeholders.

The successful applicant possesses both strong soft and hard skills and would be responsible for continuing to develop these skills throughout their time at HSCA. This position requires excellent communication skills including well-defined written skills, a good listening ear, and the ability to effectively communicate verbally to a variety of stakeholders with the ability to use both technical and plain language depending on the audience. The successful applicant is highly personable and can navigate challenging situations with a calm resolve while balancing the interests of multiple and sometimes conflicting stakeholders (members of the public, community associations, the development community, and the Ward 7 Councillor’s Office).

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables :

Community Planning

  • Coordinate HSPC meetings and ensure meeting minutes are captured and made available to the Board of Directors.
  • Support community members in providing feedback on applications including connecting them with external resources like the Federation of Calgary Communities.
  • Support residents and subcommittees in moving their planning-related projects and initiatives forward.
  • Stay apprised of City of Calgary policy initiatives and communicate to the HSPC.
  • Support the HSCA Board of Directors, Executive Director, and HSPC on HSPC governance (as it relates to the HSPC Terms of Reference).
  • Work with the HSPC Executive Committee to set meeting agendas; facilitate meeting minutes, delegate tasks to subcommittee member reports and assist in providing item updates
  • Track committee membership and maintain membership list, members’ contact information and subcommittee project teams.
  • Share posts and website material as appropriate to HSCA Communications Coordinator for HSCA social media and HSCA website.
  • When able, write articles related to community planning for the HSCA print and email newsletters.

Other

  • About You :

You are a community-builder with a passion for the urban environment. You are an excellent facilitator who is skilled at navigating challenging stakeholder engagements. With an eye for detail and excellent organizational skills, you can organize both people and information. While you love working with people, you also like the opportunity to take a step back and put pen to paper, tailoring your writing style for a diversity of audiences. You thrive in an organization committed to leadership over management and enjoy a high level of autonomy in your work. Finally, you are willing, if not eager, to participate in shared learning and development with your team related to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Truth and Reconciliation and Anti-Racism.

  • Degree, diploma or certificate in a related field of study or commensurate experience

  • We welcome applications from candidates who may not have all of the listed qualifications but have a passion for the work and a willingness to learn.
