POSITION OVERVIEW

The Department of Computer Science is expanding its presence, domestically and internationally, by developing a broad partnership network, with the goal of achieving a large number of deeply intertwined, meaningful collaborative projects between our faculty and industry partners. These new partnerships will allow faculty members to expand their collaborative networks and will also enhance student experience by developing opportunities for students to connect with industry.

Reporting to the Director of Administration, with a dotted line to the Academic Director of Partnerships, the Assistant Director, Partnerships works independently to serve a pivotal leadership role in the operational management of the Computer Science Partnerships portfolio. The Assistant Director provides tactical and highly professional leadership to advance the unit’s mandate, including staff leadership for the unit. The Assistant Director is responsible for implementing strategic partnerships with external entities, both industrial and academic, across all sectors to advance the Department’s priorities; maintaining strategic partnerships across institutional, governmental, sectoral and geographic borders; creating a strategy for bringing together and serving researchers from varied internal and external partners and CS faculty members to create an engaged academic community of affiliates; preparing key documents including internal and external progress / impact and financial reports; finding and applying for research and innovation funding; and establishing a framework to support and advance student engagement with industry. This position collaborates with internal University units to achieve outcomes, such as the University’s Innovations & Partnerships Office, and the Arts & Science Research Services Office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

A University or College degree in Business Administration or a related field or an acceptable combination of education and experience Project management and / or financial management certificate is highly desirable.

Experience :

  • Five (5) or more years relevant operations management experience in a role that oversees teams working in a research-intensive environment with a focus on partnerships development. Experience in an industry environment, preferably in the private sector
  • Experience managing and leading teams preferably in the private sector and in a fast-paced environment. Experience leading teams in a unionized environment is an asset. in strategic research planning, project execution and process development.
  • Strong understanding of the technology landscape, domestically and internationally.
  • Knowledge and awareness of current industry trends and research and development experience.
  • Experience writing business documents (such as complex business contracts) and compiling reports and settling the financial and business terms of commercialization agreements and working with organizational policies and guidelines.
  • Successful experience with entrepreneurial ventures and business development.
  • A creative but pragmatic strategic thinker with strong managerial, follow-through and implementation skills along with proven leadership and networking talents.
  • Ability to analyze large volumes of information from various sources, keeping abreast of industry trends, and understanding the departmental structure and research areas.
  • Knowledge of research funding landscape in Canada is highly desirable.

Experience developing and managing large and highly varied project portfolios across multiple domains.

Experience developing and maintaining relationships with partners in the technology industry, including but not limited to tech entrepreneurs, C-level executives, founders, venture capital firms, and fund managers. Experience navigating a variety of bureaucracies and working with legal and business development partners.

Ability to execute autonomously at the project, program, and department level : having been given a high-level goal, building an actionable plan to achieve it.

Must have the ability to work with a broad range of internal and external information systems and tools.

Must have demonstrated the ability to grasp, understand be conversant in describing and expanding upon complex research concepts from many disciplines ranging across many fields.
