JOB DESCRIPTION
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines :
Partners with senior management to develop strategic and operational plans that have a substantial impact on both the short and long-term successes of the company.
Oversees all company actuarial practices, including pricing, reserving, data management, reporting, and data modeling functions.
Oversees pricing and rate review strategy and reserve adequacy process to ensure the achievement of continued profitability and / or growth objectives. Sets standards and communicates position to the Chief Actuary and senior business leaders.
Oversees all actuarial activities and research for the company, including delivery of actuarial opinions, regulatory reporting (including OSFI, etc), mathematical analysis of operations for rate making and senior management decision making.
Oversees the modelling and analysis of claims and underwriting information for CAT occurrences
Partners with Underwriting for product development, portfolio optimization and pricing segmentation support.
Partners with Finance in reviewing reinsurance support, planning and forecasting, and capital modeling, including dynamic solvency testing.
Works with Claims identifying drivers of results and sharing trends.
Leads, directs and has full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with corporate strategic direction.
Fosters an organizational culture that inspires ownership and innovation of process maintenance and sustainability and establishes goals with strategies to maintain them.
Participates on the Enterprise Risk Management Committee, Pensions Committee and other Branch committees, as required.
Works in collaboration with US and UK Actuarial Leadership Teams.
May perform additional duties as assigned
Reporting Relationship
Reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer, Canada.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Mastery in diverse disciplines, i.e., actuarial science, economics, finance, and statistical modeling and comprehensive understanding of critical issues in other related areas.
2. Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence (external and / or internal relationships), team, and / or matrix environment.
3. Strong leadership and management skills demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
4. Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.
5. Extensive level knowledge of the property & casualty insurance industry, its products and services.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
Education & Experience
Must be a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA)
Must meet all requirements to be an Appointed Actuary (outlined in OSFI Guideline No. E-15, dated : August 2023).
Bachelor’s degree in Math, Actuarial Science or related field required. Master’s Degree in related field preferred.
Typically a minimum of fifteen years of related work experience, with ten years management experience.
