Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following :
Supervision of laboratory staff
Plans and delivers specialized testing at the diagnostic lab including plant bioassays, review of data, and authorization of results to clients.
Technical oversight of the high throughput sequencing workflow in the diagnostic section.
Collaborate with other groups in the CFIA and external stakeholders to support the national clean plant and post entry quarantine programs
Communicate with clients on sample logistics.
Provision of scientific advice to clients, staff, and management relating to laboratory testing and plant virology.
Lead and collaborate on scientific projects, laboratory investigations, and validation studies.
Support of the ISO quality assurance system including writing and reviewing documents, performing internal audits, and documenting risks and non-conforming work.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
EEd1 - A bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or applied science from a recognized postsecondary institution, with a specialization in virology, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related discipline.
The degree must be from a recognized university or be recognized by the governing provincial authority as being equivalent to a university degree.
The specialization may be obtained through an acceptable combination of education and / or training and / or experience, as determined by the appointing manager.
Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
EE1- Experience in the development, validation, or verification of laboratory methods and procedures applicable to virology.
EE2 - Experience in gathering, summarizing and analyzing scientific information to provide advice or guidance or make appropriate recommendations.
EE3- Significant* experience conducting a molecular biology techniques.
Significant is defined as experience associated with having performed a broad range of related activities which could normally be acquired over a period of approximately two years or more.

Conditions of employment
Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process.
