Job Description :

The Fire Marshal, reporting to the Manager of Security & Fire Life Safety, plays a pivotal role in fostering a safe environment across all Trillium Health Partners (THP) sites.

This position is accountable for implementing and upholding fire safety measures and protocols to safeguard THP staff, clients, visitors, and volunteers.

With leadership responsibilities, the Fire Marshal oversees all facets of fire safety and prevention within THP. This includes recommending fire safety policies, conducting training and drills, monitoring Fire Code compliance, and supporting Facilities Operations and Maintenance in equipment upkeep.

Central to the role is the development and execution of hospital-wide training programs focused on fire safety and emergency response, alongside identifying and addressing compliance issues in alignment with Ontario Fire Codes.

Additionally, the Fire Marshal acts as a liaison with Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services (MFES), Toronto Fire Services (TFS), Ontario Fire Marshal’s office, and other relevant authorities.

Budgetary responsibilities entail operating within allocated budgets, invoice processing, and supporting budget planning efforts.

Upholding diversity, fostering teamwork, effective communication, and adherence to regulatory requirements are also key aspects of this role.

Position Summary :

  • Develop and execute Fire & Life Safety Plan, including goals and objectives, to ensure alignment with direct and indirect patient care providers.
  • Coordinate and oversee monthly Code Red drills, annual Code Green drills, and fire training sessions to ensure staff readiness for effective response.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to fire safety inspections, training activities, and emergency responses.
  • Lead annual inspections across sites in collaboration with MFES / TFS.
  • Development and administration of hospital-wide training, educational and safety awareness programs focused on fire safety and emergency response.
  • Ensure compliance with Ontario Fire Code pertaining to elevators, automatic transfer switches, sprinkler systems, fire alarm panels, fire doors, fire dampers, fire separation, etc.
  • Liaise with Mississauga & Toronto Fire Services, Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and any other authorities having jurisdiction.
  • As a part of the emergency response team, you will be required to promptly attend site in case of an emergency.
  • Ensure high compliance levels by inspecting fire exits / doors, emergency routes, emergency exit lighting, fire hoses, extinguisher cabinets, etc.

  • Establish a safe environment through inspections, hazard identification, and training programs, aligning with neighboring hospitals' fire training plans.
  • Manage and enforce applicable Municipal, Provincial, and Federal codes, standards, regulations, and legislation.
  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures for the Security & Fire Life Safety Department.
  • Evaluate and apply quality indicators for fire services provided, fostering continuous improvement.
  • Uphold a positive and professional image of the department and Hospital.
  • Direct, review, and / or conduct project studies for operational enhancements in fire and life safety programs across sites.
  • Develop, plan, establish and monitor fire alarm system troubles / bypassing and fire prevention programs.
  • Ensure timely completion of inspections, audits, reports, and training requirements.
  • Investigate fire related incidents to determine their cause and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Introduce technological improvements to enhance operational efficiency of fire alarm, suppression, and smoke control systems.
  • Foster effective fire and life safety practices within the hospital community through risk assessments and guidance.
  • Monitor trends / issues, provide training on improvement plans, and ensure standards are met.
  • Implement and sustain a Fire Warden program.
  • Participate in committees related to fire safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Assist internal partners in the development and maintenance of comprehensive departmental evacuation plans and procedures.

Key Qualifications :

The successful candidate will possess the following :

  • Minimum of a Community College diploma in Fire Protection Technology, Fire Protection / Emergency Services, or other fire safety related programs.
  • Preferably holds CFAA designation.
  • 3 years’ experience in promoting fire safety, ideally within a healthcare setting.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting plans, drawings, and diagrams.
  • Proven ability to effectively lead emergency and crisis situations.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of NFPA standards and best practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of various sprinkler systems, fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems.
  • Capability to work autonomously with minimal supervision is an asset.
  • Thorough understanding of legislation related to fire safety.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Self-motivation, proactiveness, and adeptness at managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to provide clear direction to staff and ensure quality of work.
  • Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of CCTV Surveillance systems, Fire Panels, Access Control Systems, and other electronic security systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to make prompt decisions and handle clients tactfully.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
