Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Emergency department at Chetwynd General Hospital.

In accordance with established vision and values of the organization, the Registered Nurse (RN), Rural General practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) as well as within a patient and family centered care model.

The RN practices in a variety of clinical settings and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of client care.

Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the RN ensures the delivery of client centered care by assisting individual clients and their families respond to changing health care needs.

The RN demonstrates a specialized body of knowledge and bases practice on nursing science and related content from other sciences and humanities.

Rural community hospitals provide a wide range of services and depending on the location may require the RN to be competent in multiple clinical settings.

This job description addresses various scenarios where nurses are required to work in one or more areas requiring advanced training & experience.

Northern Health In-House Emergency Training Program Details Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence informed on-line curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO).

REDEP combines Elsevier's ENO online curriculum with a skills / simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care, at a novice level.

Preparation will be accomplished by :

  • Introducing the basic topics, concepts, and practice guidelines that are fundamental to emergency nursing.
  • Developing the specialized skills, knowledge, attitudes, and judgement required to provide safe, competent, and individualized care to the emergency patient.
  • Promoting professionalism in emergency nursing.
  • There are 2 training positions available for 2024 / 2025
  • Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
  • Successful candidates may be required complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
  • Learners should expect to make a 4 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
  • Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, may be required to successfully complete the program
  • Flexibility for practicums is necessary
  • Prior experience on an acute care ward (. medical / surgical) preferred
  • Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills / simulation
  • Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP. (If needed participants can complete an Elsevier ECG module during theory)
  • Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
  • Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
  • Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided.

Chetwynd General Hospital has 7 Long-term beds and 5 Acute Care beds. Services include emergency, medical inpatient, palliative care, and respiratory therapy.

Chetwynd lies in the foothills of the Eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains and is the natural transportation hub of the Peace River Country.

The area is rich in oil, gas and timber and the local resources and manufacturing industries reflect these assets. Other major industries in the area are ranching, tourism, mining, and the service sector.

The population of Chetwynd is 3,100, with a trading area of 7,000. There are three elementary schools, one Montessori school, one secondary school and a Northern Lights College campus.

Qualfications

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Advanced preparation in the clinical specialty of the assigned area as required by the position :
  • Emergency : Advanced preparation in an ED clinical specialty or an equivalent combination of education & experience. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within three (3) years.
  • Perinatal : Advanced preparation in a Perinatal clinical specialty or an equivalent combination of education & experience.

Current Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 2 years. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within three (3) years.

Skills and Abilities :

  • Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide nursing care through appropriate / prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety type interventions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the clients, families, the public, medical staff and the members of the interdisciplinary team using verbal, written and computer communication means.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve effectively.
  • Ability to promote client-focused care that demonstrates care for and with clients and significant others, sensitive to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy and social justice concerns.
  • Ability to transmit information intended to instruct clients and others about topics essential to health care and well-being.
  • Manages time and resources, implementing activities to promote cooperation among relevant others, collaboration across disciplines and related activities.
