Safety & Environment Manager

The Safety & Environment Manager will provide strategic leadership on safety and health management initiatives across Maritime Paper Products facilities.

This includes providing leadership, coaching, and subject matter expertise. You will work with the Maritime Paper team to lead the implementation of safety plans and programs while supporting overall corporate commitment to attaining safety excellence that exceeds regulatory requirements.

You will deliver effective environmental compliance, health, safety and sustainability programs to manage risk and ensure the safety and well-being of Maritime Paper team members at all times.

Main Areas of Focus :

Health and Safety Drive safety performance improvements through team member engagement and effective safety management systems.

Conduct investigations and root cause analysis, implement preventative measures, establish critical metrics to manage EHS programs and work closely with our Joint Occupation and Health Committees.

EHS Team Leadership Develop internal leadership and technical expertise. Attract and retain the best EHS professionals through effective performance management, succession planning, training, and leadership development.

Environmental compliance Ensure site compliance with provincial regulations, standards, and rules. Stay current on policy changes.

Sustainability Drive safety strategy and execute on site specific projects in line with overall corporate sustainability initiatives.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Provide leadership, vision and strategic direction to a broad range of safety and environment initiatives and issues across Maritime Paper.
  • Collaborate across functional areas and engage employees and managers to develop innovative safety solutions and best practices that position Maritime Paper Products to achieve our corporate vision, priorities and objectives.
  • Lead the development of company-wide annual safety improvement plans as well as build a safety strategy that aligns with the 5-year business plan and meets the performance improvement objectives and commitment of the various facilities.
  • Drive engagement and communication across the organization and through all levels of unionized and non-unionized environments to continuously improve safety compliance.
  • Effectively lead, manage and appropriately champion the commitment of safety compliance, inclusive and harassment-free workplaces, operational excellence and efficiency, teamwork and people development.
  • Manage the safety team to effectively implement strategic business plans, monitor and report results, and achieve safety operational objectives.
  • Oversee the development and delivery training programs that supports development of Maritime Paper’s technical and trades employees and contractors, and company-wide safety training.
  • Promote and develop safety programs and culture; identify trends in health and wellness, new safety equipment and materials, etc.
  • Regular interaction and promotion of positive relations with employees, peers, subtrades, customers, legislative authorities, including Workers Compensation.
  • Conduct annual safety audits and coordinate external audits as required, maintaining corporate accreditation.
  • Research and recommend a hazard identification and incident reporting platform.
  • Responsible for the administration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the corporate safety programs in accordance with all provincial legislation and company policies and procedures.

Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sciences, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline is required.
  • A CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professionals) designation would be an asset.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience within a manufacturing environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership roles with responsibilities related to leading and directing safety, operations or risk management within a manufacturing organization, ideally within a unionized environment.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement long-term strategic plans that meet identified business requirements.
  • Experience managing multiple facilities.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license with the ability to travel throughout the Atlantic provinces.

Preferred Skills :

  • Demonstrated experience building strategic external relationships with regulators, provincial agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Proven collaborative and agile decision-making approach across the organization, including maintaining positive working relationships with Union representatives.
  • Proven influencing skills, change management, as well as superior communication and facilitation abilities at all levels and across union and non-unionized employee groups.
  • Proven ability to form partnerships and leverage diverse perspectives to build and deliver integrated safety solutions.
  • Ability to work autonomously and deliver significant impact in a fast-paced environment against changing priorities with limited resources.
