Trans Mountain operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 300,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta and British Columbia, and 111 kilometres of pipeline in Washington state.

This position will be based at the Calgary Head Office location and will report to the Strategic Advisor, Fundamentals & Market Analysis.
This a contract position with a duration of 12-18 months.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities for the Market and Data Analyst can be grouped into the categories of : Data Procurement and Management, Model Development and Maintenance, Analytics and Market Monitoring, and Insights Delivery.
Data Procurement and Management :
- Provide support in identifying and evaluating relevant sources of data / datasets required to support analytics initiatives;
- Develop and implement the most effective and efficient methods for procuring, manipulating and managing datasets, with an eye to continual improvement;
- Work collaboratively with internal colleagues to reduce / eliminate redundancies in data procurement and data management; and
- Datasets could include : pricing data for oil and products, production / refining / demand data, inter and intra-regional commodity flow data, export / import data, storage data, shipping and cargo data, and transportation rates and tariffs.
Model Development and Maintenance :
- Develop, maintain and continuously improve fit-for -purpose models to support and drive analytics initiatives;
- Determine optimal model environment (initially) and progress model platforms and capabilities over time based on analytics needs;
- Establish effective processes for maintaining models including automation of key inputs and outputs where appropriate; and
- Ensure appropriate model documentation for continuity and contingency purposes.
Analytics and Market Monitoring :
- Leveraging off of developed in-house models, perform various ad hoc and ongoing analysis to assess and identify key market trends, shifts, anomalies, relationships, market balancing mechanisms and leading indicators to enhance market insights;
- Pro-actively monitor key market metrics and indicators to understand current market drivers and key watch-outs impacting future state of market;
- Assist in development and assessment of various fundamental market scenarios that would meaningfully impact key market outcomes; and
- Ensure analytics outcomes appropriately feed into the insights delivery to ensure key stakeholders are kept appropriately informed.
Insights Delivery :
- Support and participate in an ongoing needs assessment of key stakeholders to ensure the team’s fundamentals and market analytics efforts and outputs appropriately evolves with the needs of the company;
- Support the development and delivery of fit-for-purpose mediums to deliver market insights to key stakeholders on a timely basis;
- Insights delivery could include combinations of recurring market reports and dashboards, presentations and other one-off topical research initiatives.
Qualifications and Professional Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study including Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics or Engineering.
- One to Five years relevant industry experience.
- Schooling, training and / or experience in certain data science disciplines would be an asset.
- Demonstrated understanding of energy markets (crude oil and refined products in particular) would be an important asset.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel based analytics functions and intermediate proficiency in other MS applications (PowerPoint, Word, Teams).
- Working knowledge and experience with statistical modeling and relational database platforms also an important asset.
- Strong desire and drive to understand the structural setup and functioning of energy markets (the why and not just the what )
- Proven data management, model development and analytical capabilities.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
- Self-starter and strong ability to prioritize workflow.
- Strong analytical mindset and problem-solving skills.
- Strong oral, written, interpersonal and communication skills.
