About the School of Life Science & Business
The School of Life Science & Business provides dynamic high-tech, hands-on learning opportunities in support of animal health, business and horticulture.
The School is also home to the National Meat Training Centre and the Olds College Botanic Gardens. A variety of certificates, diplomas and applied degrees are granted from the School of Life Science & Business.
Fields of study offered within the School of Life Science & Business are : Animal Health, Business, Equine, Horticulture, and the National Meat Training Centre.
The Opportunity - Service Worker I, National Meat Training Centre, Full-time, Permanent
The National Meat Training Centre (NMTC) at Olds College is a one-of-a-kind program in North America that teaches a full range of meat cutting and slaughter skills.
The Meat Processing Training has graduated over 500+ students in its 53-years of operating, with many now playing a major role in the Canadian meat industry.
This Service Worker position is an integral support to the National Meat Training Centre.
Key Job Functions :
Customer Service and Sales
Demonstrate a strong sales aptitude and Customer-First Approach. Meet the demands of the department with professionalism.
Operate Point of Sale System, have accurate record-keeping abilities.
Demonstrate and share product knowledge.
Resolve problems that arise, such as customer complaints.
Prepare and organize display counter at the start and end of the day to ensure product rotation, freshness and optimal display quality.
Safety and Cleanliness
Follow all workplace, food safety policies and practices to ensure a safe work environment.
Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the meat centre, including equipment, work surfaces, and storage areas.
Follow and execute cleaning schedules, sanitizing tools, equipment, and work areas to meet regulatory health standards.
Assist students with plant sanitation.
Initiate and complete Food safety paperwork.
Support Slaughter, Meat Processing & Meat Preparation
Perform various meat processing and preparation such as knife cutting and tying of steaks and roasts from primals, sausage production, and meat curing of hams bacon and other meat products.
Ensure proper handling and storage of raw and finished meat products according to health and safety regulations.
Operate basic meat processing equipment, including assembly, disassembly and calibration, such as industrial computerized retort kettle, smokehouse, stuffer, meat grinders, various meat Injector, patti machine, bandsaw, Ph meter and Aw meter.
Package products, organize cryovac bags, and assist with inventory control on Google Keep
Package meat products accurately, ensuring correct labeling for type, weight, and pricing.
Maintain packaging equipment, ensuring it is clean, safe, and operational.
Slaughter beef, pork and lamb
Education / Experience / Skills / Knowledge Required :
The successful candidate(s) will have a Meat Processing certificate or a combination of education and equivalent industry experience.
Proficient in utilizing the Software Programs :
Madgetech program - Data Logger program
BMS - Bizerba scale management program.
Cooler Temperature records.
Point of Sale experience would be an asset
Proven computer skills including Google Drive, Facebook, Email, Google Suite and Google Keep.
Conditions of Employment :
Repetitive physical work and may be required to do heavy lifting.
Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses.
Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
This position will require flexible hours with a work schedule that is primarily weekdays with the occasional Saturday.
