Canada Lands Company Limited is a federal Crown corporation with three subsidiaries :

  • Canada Lands Company CLC Limited manages, redevelops and sells federal lands on behalf of the Government of Canada to ensure that optimal financial and community value is realized from these assets and manages the CN Tower;
  • The Old Port of Montreal Corporation Inc. owns the Old Port of Montréal and the Montréal Science Centre; and
  • Parc Downsview Park Inc. owns, operates and manages Downsview Park (a former military base) in Toronto. In addition to active and passive recreation on reserved land, the corporation sells parcels for commercial and housing purposes.

Through community consultation and partnering with the private sector, Canada Lands Company Limited and its employees apply real estate expertise and creative property solutions to deliver lasting value for Canadians.

Board members are responsible for recommending the corporation’s strategic direction, evaluating its performance, safeguarding the corporation’s assets and reporting to the Crown on the corporation’s activities and performance.

Specific roles and responsibilities of the corporation’s Board members are as follows :

  • Promote a culture of integrity, ethical business conduct and corporate social responsibility throughout the corporation;
  • Facilitate the achievement of long-term goals by overseeing the corporation’s strategic planning processes;
  • Identify emerging issues that may affect the corporation;
  • Ensure adequate systems are in place to evaluate, monitor, and manage the principal risks facing the corporation;
  • Oversee the appointment, assessment and discharge of the President and Chief Executive Officer, regularly review the management succession plan, and promote programs to develop leadership throughout the corporation;
  • Ensure the integrity of the corporation’s information systems and management practices; and
  • Ensure that timely information is provided to the Government of Canada, through the Minister, accurately reflecting the corporation’s state of operations, annual performance and plans for the future.

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an applicable combination of education, experience, and / or job-related training;
  • Experience on a board of directors / trustees of a public, private or not-for-profit sector organization;
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas :
  • Real estate industry and commercial real estate development;
  • Attractions, entertainment, tourism or hospitality industry;
  • Working as a commercial or real estate lawyer;
  • Working with Indigenous communities or businesses;
  • Construction, planning and design, urban planning, architecture, land use initiatives or civil engineering;
  • Municipal official planning, zoning and land development approvals processes.
  • Experience at the senior level in one or more of the following management areas :
  • Auditing large, complex organizations, with a Certified Professional Accountant designation;
  • Managing the human resources function of a large corporation, including determining human resources strategies to reach corporate objectives, hiring and retaining appropriate resources, and setting principles and policies for compensation;
  • Managing the legal, risk or compliance component of a large corporation;
  • Monitoring corporate performance against strategic and business plans, including assessing operating results to evaluate whether the business is being properly managed.
  • Experience in the area of climate change mitigation and sustainability would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of financial planning and reporting processes;
  • Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the Chairperson, the Board of Directors, and the President and Chief Executive Officer, including the corporation’s fundamental accountabilities to the shareholder and taxpayers, would be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of principles and best practices in corporate governance, public policy development, financial and risk management, human resources, corporate planning and reporting or performance management would be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of the Canada Business Corporations Act and the Financial Administration Act would be considered an asset;
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements;
  • Ability to provide corporate vision and strategic direction for Canada Lands Company Limited to fulfill its mandate and attain its objectives effectively and efficiently;
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with the Chairperson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Directors and senior management of Canada Lands Company Limited;
  • Ability to recognize and address emerging issues and to advance ideas; and
  • Ability to analyze complex issues, think strategically and balance the business needs of the organization with the public interest.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
