Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI) strengthens Alberta's economy by enabling growth, diversification, sustainability and innovation in the agriculture sector.
The ministry also works to ensure that Alberta's rural communities are able to participate in and benefit from the province's economic growth and prosperity including agriculture and agri-food business, trade and economics and farm business management programs.
Through these actions, the ministry provides key support elements to assist with enhancing economic development and the well being of the agriculture sector, rural communities and municipalities.
This includes animal health policies and programs, disease surveillance and response, inspection and investigation services.
Role
Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Primary Agriculture, the Executive Director will be responsible for providing strategic leadership on animal health, welfare, associated programs, and services.
The Executive Director will also collaborate with the divisional leadership team including Federal and Provincial partners and industry to deliver strong programs that will provide a full view of the animal health, welfare, assurance, and policy within Alberta.
Additionally, the Executive Director will represent the Ministry and province on federal, provincial, and territorial initiatives and working groups.
This position leads a senior management team consisting of the Inspection and Investigation Section, Animal Health, and the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian (OCPV).
The Executive Director will bring demonstrated success and facilitate partnerships and coordinate approaches to resolve sensitive, complex policy, and scientific issues, while providing insight on policy and programs.
The Executive Director will also be accountable for responding to the recovery of animal health emergency management, meat inspections, and investigations.
Additionally, the Executive Director, will provide advice to the Assistant Deputy Minister and Executive Team, and will have close working relationships with senior representatives of the Primary Agriculture Division, the Ministry, other ministries, governments, as well as community, industry, and various stakeholder groups.
Qualifications
You bring extensive senior management experience with a diverse background in agriculture, animal health and welfare and demonstrated expertise in policy, program and legislation development.
You have a proven ability to consult and negotiate solutions with diverse partners and stakeholders. Your strong political acumen and excellent communication skills enable you to facilitate collaborative partnerships to resolve sensitive and complex policy and scientific issues.
You have experience managing financial and human resources with the ability to motivate, coach and mentor a team of professionals.
Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills that support innovation and the ability to develop strategies that will address challenges and opportunities will be a key to your success.
A bachelor’s degree in agriculture, animal science or animal health or similar education is preferred.
Salary
$5,082.46 - $6,679.30 bi-weekly ($132,652.21 - $174,329.73 year)
