PLSC PDF GENOMICS OF FORAGE LEGUMES

Primary Purpose : The goals of these PDF positions are to : 1) understand genetic diversity and structure of global collection of Red Clover to initiate a robust breeding strategy to improve seed yield, biological N fixation and disease resistance.

2) Uncover genomic basis of salt tolerance in alfalfa. Specific goals include : a) characterize large collections of germplasm using genomic tools and precision phenotyping platform ( UAV).

b) Assess genetic diversity to identify populations with unique genetic structure. c) Discover / develop molecular markers for salt tolerant plant selection.

d) Use genomic selection to improve traits of interest. Work will be carried out through the Crop Development Centre / Livestock Forage Center of Excellence at the University of Saskatchewan.

Nature of Work : There are two, 3-year positions, provided satisfactory performance during the probation period. The PDF will work closely with Dr.

Bill Biligetu’s lab and his collaborators to plan, design, and implement research protocols associated with the phenotyping / genotyping of red clover / alfalfa germplasm in field / greenhouse / lab, analyzing, interpreting and presenting data, and writing scientific manuscripts.

The candidates will assist with report writing and to help in the supervision of research activities of students associated with the project.

Accountabilities : The PDFs will be responsible for all aspects of research projects and will work closely with the Principal Investigator.

  • Specific responsibilities will include planning, designing, and implementing research protocols, sample collection and processing;
  • data management and statistical analyses including bioinformatic analysis of complex sequence data; writing manuscripts and reports;

presenting regular progress reports. The candidate will meet regularly with the research team. Support for other field research projects as required.

Education : A PhD degree in plant science, bioinformatics or related discipline within the last 5 years, preferably with experience in plant breeding and bioinformatic analysis.

Licenses : Eligible to obtain a Saskatchewan driver’s license.

Experience : The successful candidates have demonstrated experiences conducting molecular lab work and field experiments with crop plants.

Experience in Python / R or other bioinformatic software would be a definite asset. Experiences analyzing large datasets, producing high-quality data visualizations, and publishing research results in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals are required.

Skills : Demonstrated ability to create and foster relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and education levels.

Demonstrated ability to present research results to seed growers and industry audiences.
