We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-kwuh-tlum) meaning Red Fish Up the River .

The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), and other Coast Salish Peoples.

One of BC’s Top Employers, the City of Coquitlam offers meaningful career opportunities to make a difference within the local community.

As the sixth largest city in BC, we are home to more than 150,000 residents. Our diverse municipality is a great place to work as it continues to grow through innovative urban design, inspiring arts, culture and recreation programs, and state-of-the-art transportation systems.

Our brand is built on managing our resources in a responsible and sustainable manner, while supporting a vibrant, growing regional urban centre.

We envision a bright future in Coquitlam that we hope includes you!

We are looking for a self-starter who is passionate about the environment to join our Environment team within the Engineering and Public Works department.

The Environmental Compliance Specialist will assist in the operation of environmental protection and pollution prevention programs and will be responsible for managing the City’s real-time water quality monitoring program.

This position will also investigate issues and enforce a range of environmental bylaws including stream and drainage protection, water conservation and pesticide use.

The Environmental Compliance Specialist will recommend protective measures and improvements to reduce and control environmental impacts related to development activities, construction issues, businesses and residential properties.

The position will also be responsible for investigating related complaints and enforcing relevant bylaws.

The successful candidate will have completed a Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, environmental management, resource management, or a related field, along with a minimum of three years’ related experience and sound knowledge and experience in water quality sampling, testing and monitoring equipment.

Excellent public education and interpersonal skills, strong written / verbal communication, experience in data recording / entry and mapping, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are required for the role.

Formal conflict resolution training, bylaw enforcement experience (including evidence collection), and experience conducting public education and outreach campaigns would be considered an asset.
