The Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa wishes to fill one (1) regular tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant;

the field of expertise : Critical Surveillance and Security Studies .

Candidates will need to demonstrate expertise, commitment to a research program, and a record of refereed publications. We encourage interdisciplinary scholars with one or more of the following areas of specialization : surveillance and policing of Indigenous and / or racially minoritized populations, counter terrorism and political policing, AI, cybersecurity, and digital surveillance, critical approaches to surveillance and security technologies, postcolonial surveillance;

authoritarian surveillance, human rights and resistance, and critical security and surveillance theory. The candidate must be able to teach and supervise in French.

The Faculty of Social Sciences comprises nine departments, schools and institutes, which offer undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral programs in both English and French.

With its 10,000 students, 260 full-time professors, and wide array of programs and research centres, the Faculty of Social Sciences plays a key role at the heart of the University of Ottawa.

Its graduate students are supervised by excellent researchers and undertake cutting-edge research in the Faculty’s Master’s and Ph.D. programs.

Duties :

  • Research activities and refereed publications,
  • Teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in criminology including in methods and theory,
  • Supervision of graduate students,
  • Commitment to participating in the educational and administrative activities of the department and the Faculty of Social Sciences,
  • Performing any other activity provided for in the collective agreement.

Required skills :

  • PhD in Criminology, Sociology, Political Science, Human Geography, Communications, or a related field with, with specialization in surveillance and security
  • Demonstrate excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching and research
  • Must be able to teach in French at the time of hiring.

Bilingualism :

The University of Ottawa is proud of its more than 175-year tradition of bilingualism. All faculty members in the Faculty of Social Sciences must demonstrate active bilingualism before being granted tenure.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach predominantly in French.

Terms : Tenure-track position

Wage : Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $89,622 (as of May 1, 2023).

Starting Date : July 1, 2024
