Here’s how

As a business-minded lawyer with deep expertise in pension law, you will provide legal guidance and support on all aspects of a registered pension plan including design, governance, compliance, administration, asset transfers, surplus and windups as well as other retirement and savings solutions for private and public sector clients, both in Canada and the Caribbean.

What you’ll do

Provide guidance and support to internal stakeholders (i.e. consultants, actuaries, pension administrators, and investment experts) and external clients of TELUS Health on legislative, case law and other industry advancements

Support the development of innovative new products in retirement savings and financial well-being

Provide governance and compliance support in respect of pension plans and investment management within the context of pension standards legislation and Income Tax Act requirements

Support all aspects of plan wind-ups and administration of pension plans as a result of employer insolvency, reorganization or de-risking

Strategic design and implementation of special projects such as plan mergers, reviews and audits of plan governance, drafting of governance documentation, fiduciary training and surplus withdrawal applications

Update the formerly known Morneau Shepell Handbook of Canadian Pension and Benefit Plans and other TELUS Health publications

Provide legal guidance on international mandates in the Caribbean and elsewhere in pension law, insurance law and compensation consulting

Stay abreast of industry topics and trends, communicating with regulatory authorities and participating in industry organizations (e.g., OBA, CPBI, ACPM)

Delegation and peer review, where appropriate

You have

A law degree and called to the Bar of Ontario or another jurisdiction in Canada

Minimum 8-10 years of experience in pension law and related income tax law (experience in insolvency, employment and labour would be an asset)

Member in good standing of the Law Society in the province where the applicant practices

Nice to haves

Bilingual in English and French is an asset

Membership in good standing with law societies outside of the applicant’s province of primary residence
