The Ottawa Police Service Board (OPSB) is a seven-member civilian body that is responsible for the governance and oversight of the Ottawa Police Service.

The Ottawa Police Service is the City of Ottawa’s community police service. Its 2,100+ members (sworn and civilian) are committed to ensuring Ottawa remains one of the safest cities in North America by protecting the safety, security and quality of life of its citizens.

The Police Service Board is seeking to appoint its Executive Director (ED) .

The Board is responsible for the provision of adequate and effective police services in the municipality and as OPSB’s most senior administrative leader, the ED strategically supports the Board by leading the Board Office to develop and implement strategies, policies, and stakeholder relationships that enable the Board to enhance public safety and ensure the delivery of efficient community safety services.

The ED leads and oversees the Board Office by managing its operations, staff, consultants, and external legal counsel as needed.

Accountable to the Board and serving as its primary strategist and advisor on issues related to the Board's mandate, priorities, and objectives, the ED also supports the Board Chair in their interactions with the Service and provides advice and options on contentious issues.

As an ideal candidate, you combine a university degree in a relevant discipline (public or business administration, law, social sciences, etc.

with seven years of progressive leadership experience in a comparable public sector setting. OPSB will benefit from your comprehensive understanding of board governance, public administration, policy development, and public accountability principles.

You can demonstrate an understanding of labor relations, collective bargaining, human rights, and occupational health & safety issues as well as knowledge of obligations of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act related statutory regulations.

Previous experience in a municipal setting, particularly as it relates to municipal budgeting and accountability, is ideal, as is knowledge of the Community Safety and Policing Act.

You are an outstanding communicator, both oral and written, who can create relationships based on trust and transparency with a diverse array of audiences including professional, government, media, and community organizations.

You are a highly respected team leader, valued for your collaborative and inclusive style, and commitment to coaching and building high performing teams.

You bring a track record of leading staff to meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced, political, complex environment where issues management, media relations, and the need to work outside of regular business hours is common.
