Senior Data Scientist

The Atlantic is seeking a Senior Data Scientist with a broad set of skills who can translate business problems into quantitative research projects and see them through to completion.

The role will work closely with partners in Product, Engineering, and Growth to understand their strategic goals and identify opportunities where Data Science can bring value to the organization.

Data Science at The Atlantic covers a lot of ground, and we expect you to juggle multiple projects and work with multiple stakeholders.

On some days you’ll be heads-down building a machine learning model to power unique onsite experiences to our readers; on other days you’ll work closely with stakeholders to understand their strategic goals and design an A / B test to achieve them.

What will you do?

• Analyze large datasets to report on nuanced experiment results, to understand complex reader journeys, and to identify key insights and opportunities for revenue and reader growth.
• Translate open-ended business problems into quantitative research projects and machine learning problems; own the projects from hypothesis to analysis to delivery.
• Evangelize best practices for website experimentation, bringing confidence and rigor to questions of test design, sample size, and methodology.
• Spearhead the development of machine learning models focused on predicting user behavior, personalized recommendations, and natural language processing, potentially leveraging LLMs.
• Collaborate with Engineering to deploy machine learning models and ensure actionable results.
• Socialize an analytical mindset across the organization, advocating for data literacy, data-driven insights, and a culture of experimentation.
• Present findings to stakeholders and leadership with the appropriate level of context and supporting data visualizations.

We work in Python, R, and SQL, on platforms such as Google BigQuery, dbt, Hex, and Looker.

Qualifications :

• Relevant professional quantitative experience (not necessarily in the media industry).
• Experience communicating effectively with peers, stakeholders, and leadership.
• Strong SQL skills.
• Experience in Python or R (Python preferred).
• Experience applying statistics to strategic problems.
• Knowledge of statistical methodologies and tools, including experimentation design.
• Demonstrated success analyzing large datasets.

Salary minimum : $100,000; Salary maximum : $150,000.

This position is located in Washington, DC or New York City.
