Island Health seeks a part-time (0.5 FTE) Medical Director, Cowichan Primary Care Network. This position reports to the Executive Medical Director Cowichan Valley.
The Cowichan Valley PCN Medical Director will act as a dyad partner to the PCN Director. The Medical Director will provide co-leadership to the network of all non-private clinics within the Primary Care Network, including Ladysmith Family Practice, Kaatza Clinic, CareBridge Clinic, the low barrier Mental Health outreach clinic, and the developing Cowichan UPCC, enabling a forum for communication and collaboration across the sites.
They will support the growth of team-based care services and strategies, in collaboration with the Cowichan PCN Steering Committee.
The Medical Director PCN Cowichan will act as the medical representative for PCN at tables where the services of these sites as a network are sought or are impacted.
They will also ensure a strong connection to the Indigenous Nations and health centres in the Cowichan Valley area, including the away-from-home Indigenous, Metis, and Inuit population.
They will work collaboratively with the Executive Medical Director Cowichan Valley with respect to the integration of the developing UPCC within PCN structures.
They will sit as the medical representative at relevant Quality tables.
The Medical Director PCN Cowichan will report to the Executive Medical Director of the Cowichan Valley within the Island Health medical leadership framework, and they will receive input for strategic direction from the Cowichan PCN Steering Committee.
Their work is grounded in the framework of the PCN governance structure and the Vision and Value Propositions of the Cowichan Primary Care Network.
They will work with the local Island Health leadership teams, the Cowichan Valley Division of Family Practice leadership and physicians to ensure a supportive and respectful work environment for all primary care providers in the Cowichan Primary Care Network.
Main responsibilities of this position :
Leadership : Co-leads and oversees activities to ensure program service delivery is efficient, effective and integrated across Island Health sites;
Links with appropriate Departmental Medical Leaders to address matters of physician governance, including professional medical practice issues.
Operations & Quality : Establishes processes and structures to engage physicians and staff in continuous quality improvement of service delivery;
Monitors program budget and performance jointly with co-leader, and makes course corrections when necessary; Ensures appropriate investigation and resolution of program-related Patient Safety Learning System and Patient Care Quality Office events.
- Change Management : Co-develops and implements change management plans to engage and support physicians and staff through change.
- Informatics : Oversees activities that advance technology and data use to improve service delivery using the Electronic Health Records (EHR) in collaboration with the Quality Systems team, the PCN attachment hub team and the Cowichan Valley Division of Family Practice IT lead.
- Planning : Assesses, monitors and anticipates program resource needs, and works with medical leaders and administrative leaders to prioritize these needs within available resources.

- Chairs or co-chairs relevant quality and operational committees.
- Will use Island Health email address for work related to this position.
- Will dedicate time to this position during Island Health regular working hours, or as agreed upon with the Executive Medical Director and Executive Director.
- Will participate in orientation and training.
