Seaspan’s Innovation team is actively involved in technology areas including digital twins, green technologies, and autonomy in support of use cases for future vessels, engineering services, and in-service support.

Our innovation program includes current and planned projects seeking scalable solutions that integrate emerging technologies using real-time sensors, 3D spatial information, additive manufacturing and visualization technologies to improve Seaspan’s shipbuilding and refit business.

The innovation team is seeking a specialist in Additive Manufacturing and 3D modelling to lead the investigation and development of innovative manufacturing focusing on metal 3D printing processes within the shipbuilding industry.

The successful applicant will conduct initiatives that cover technical investigations, manufacturing process gaps and opportunity identification, to vendor and stakeholder relationship management to realize the objectives of Additive Manufacturing.

Complementary to this endeavor, the specialist will leverage existing Additive Manufacturing expertise along with 3D modelling proficiencies to develop in-house prototype designs and provide support to the wider team in 3D model content creations.

As the specialist’s efforts are to contribute to the wider vision and mandate of the Innovation team, the specialist will demonstrate a sound collaborative nature while maintaining individual motivation to spearhead activities to produce successful outcomes that align with the team and Seaspan’s interests.

This intermediate-level role will contribute to multiple initiatives underway within the multi-disciplinary Innovation team.

Note : This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.

What you’ll do

The successful applicant for this position will provide day-to-day support to managers and engineers while assisting and coordinating specific activities, including :

  • Taking ownership of Additive Manufacturing activities to achieve milestones and objectives that enhance Seaspan’s capabilities.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on Additive Manufacturing initiatives, including developing and evaluating novel applications, processes and business cases through prototyping and conducting pilot projects.
  • Developing relationships and collaborating with various stakeholders including process owners, end users and external SMEs to conduct pilot studies / projects that contribute to the application of Additive Manufacturing.
  • Maintaining and expanding on existing in-house additive manufacturing tools and capabilities to enable novel prototyping processes, material use and test cases as needed.
  • Leverage 3D modelling skills to create Additive Manufacturing content as well as support the wider team’s needs for 3D Content.
  • Supporting 3D model and data development objectives of the team by establishing workflow and day-to-day CAD data management.
  • Contribute to the grand vision of Innovation and the application of emerging technologies by developing strategic planning and technology development roadmaps.
  • Manage time and costs associated with work packages, ensuring timely completion and collaborative success.
  • Document and share activities through internal and external presentations as needed.
  • Support future innovation initiatives based on the successful applicant’s skill set.

What you’ll bring

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Sciences or Applied Sciences, preferably in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Materials, Manufacturing, or other disciplines that develop, modify and utilize 3D CAD models.

A diploma with 2-3 years of relevant work experience may also be considered.

  • 2 to 3 years’ experience working with Additive Manufacturing in a professional setting. Additional experience is required if education is a diploma.
  • Expertise and experience working with Additive Manufacturing technologies, software and processes in industrial and professional settings including FDM, SLA, SLS and a focus on metal Direct Energy Deposition manufacturing.
  • Proficient skills using CAD software such as Fusion 360, and SolidWorks. Additionally, slicing software such as Cura, Prusa Slicer, Simplify 3D and others.
  • knowledge of software such as Blender, Maya, and Autodesk 3DS Max would be an asset.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary environment and the ability to work effectively with limited direction and function as a key member of the Innovation team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, analytical abilities, sound judgement and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that enhance team productivity by fostering a friendly, team-oriented environment and building positive stakeholder relationships.

The estimated salary for this position is $ 78,300 - $ 95,700 . In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity.

The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
