Posting Information Posting Number CK53276P Position Title Term Appointment - Landfill Attendant No. of Staff Required 2 Position Type Term If Term position, enter length of Term in months 6 Position Groups CUPE Civic Division Infrastructure (DV220) Department Utility Services (DP213) Branch Solid Waste (BR183) Organizational Information Purpose of your Position - Non Union Classification Summary - Union The Landfill Attendant oversees the activities of the landfill public use areas, performs various maintenance / operational functions, and provides information and regulations to the public concerning solid waste disposal and recycling. Duties - Union
- Identifies material in incoming loads and directs the vehicles to the appropriate areas of the landfill site for load dumping, based on waste type.
- Sorts recyclable materials by category and moves materials to the appropriate area.
- Performs traffic control to maintain a safe site; closes and opens areas around heavy equipment use.
- Operates vehicles, basic landfill machinery (e.g. sprayer, etc.); loads compost onto public vehicles using a tractor with bucket loader.
- Digs ditches and maintains the leachate collection system ensuring screens are clean in the sludge composting area; assists Technician in manual duties related to the landfill methane gas management program (e.
g. hooks up lines, changes filters).
- Performs routine maintenance, minor repairs, and lubrication of equipment / vehicles.
- uses various hand and power tools.
- Cleans premises and vehicles; performs litter control; waters compost site materials.
- Mixes cover material and applies to the landfill face to minimize wind -blown litter.
- Responds to small fire flare ups and suppresses or controls fires using a water cannon until the Fire Department arrives.
- Trains new Landfill Attendant staff.
- Receives and responds to enquiries and complaints from the public and provides general information regarding landfill regulations, standards and procedures to commercial haulers and the general public.
- Performs the primary relief duties for the Landfill Scale Operator, including weighing incoming and outgoing vehicles on the scale, inputting data into the computer, processing payment transactions (receiving cash or processing a charge).
