We invite online letters of interest from our sworn platoon members for a position of Platoon Public Information Officer.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under the direction of the Corporate Communications Manager and the supervision of the Duty NCO, the Platoon Public Information Officer is responsible for providing support to the functional areas of Corporate Communications for the Service.
The Platoon Public Information Officer is responsible to perform as an official spokesperson for the Service to gather, develop and provide information to the public and media.
The Platoon Public Information Officer will promote the internal and external communications efforts of the Brantford Police Service and assist in the development of a variety of reports, programs, and campaigns, in addition to other duties as assigned.
Shall, in the performance of duties, respect and protect human dignity and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond to media requests and attend incident scenes to perform media interviews as needed
- Assist the Corporate Communications Manager in order to develop and execute media and social media, crime prevention, and educational campaigns
- Liaise with the Corporate Communications Manager, Duty NCO, and the Criminal Investigation Section on the dissemination of media related materials during their shift
- Utilize graphic design / video editing software to create quality and timely communications materials including, but not limited to, media releases, publications, advertisements, displays, presentations, speaking notes, web content, briefing notes, background articles and other materials as required
- Monitor media and public affairs issues in regard to impact on policing
- Organize formal news conferences, special events, and projects as needed
- Promote the positive image of the police service and ensure consistent branding of internal and external initiatives through all communications efforts.
Act as spokesperson when needed to project a positive, professional image for the service
- With consideration to equity, diversion, and inclusion (EDI) best practices, identify and implement messaging that will be received by diverse cultural groups in the city and surrounding area
- Develop and maintain effective networks and relationships with contacts in the media and with colleagues in other police agencies
- Perform other duties as required
- Be accountable to supervisors for the duties described

Knowledge
- Experience with online and traditional media and community relations
- Demonstrated knowledge and thorough understanding of communicating with respect to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) best practices in order to effectively connect with diverse communities
- Demonstrated knowledge and thorough understanding of the historical and unique relationship between Brantford, the Six Nations of the Grand River, and Mississauga's of the Credit First Nation
- Superior leadership and team building skills with the ability to drive effective results, using excellent judgment, discretion, decision making, while adhering to strict confidentiality requirements
- Knowledge of municipal governance and community groups an asset
- Sound understanding of all levels of relevant legislation, standards, and best practices in relation to police communications
Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including research and editorial skills, with excellent social media and digital communication skills
- Engaging public speaking and public relations skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills required to respond to media requests and to collaborate with members of BPS to develop story ideas, media initiatives and press conferences
- Sound investigative skills and well orientated in Service policy
- Proficient with graphic design software, video editing software, and social media platforms
- Able to manage fast-paced, difficult situations while demonstrating tact and diplomacy
- Capable of handling multiple tasks, producing work under strict and definitive deadlines
- Experience working with highly confidential, sensitive information
- Ability to successfully complete the Media Relations Officer Training course
