The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to work as a Lifeguard / Instructor / Program Leader at Arbutus Park in Youbou for summer 2024.
This is a great opportunity for those seeking to gain experience in the recreation field. Our summer positions provide the opportunity for you to learn and be mentored by experienced staff, gain valuable coaching feedback / support throughout your employment and gain valuable training courses that can be utilized in our future careers.
Under the supervision of the Recreation Programmer II, the Lifeguard / Instructor / Program Leader provides a healthy and safe environment to the patrons of our busy park located on beautiful Cowichan Lake by assisting with coordinating and instructing the Red Cross Swim Program for participants aged 3 months to seniors and performs lifeguarding when not instructing.
Other duties include : supervising the playground and park area outside the water and when not on active guard duty; plays games with kids in the park;
assists with other summer programs and special events; and may also assist with off-ice activities for participants of our Hockey School for two weeks in August.
Qualifications
- Candidates must possess a valid NLS certificate and Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate, as well as a First Aid with Child CPR certificate.
- Waterfront certification would be an asset.
- The successful candidate is enthusiastic, energetic and enjoys working with children.
- The successful candidate also possesses the ability to : Lifeguard and teach swim lessons; establish and maintain a respectful, fun relationship with children while maintaining a position of authority.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, managers, and the general public.Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing when communicating with children, parents and supervisors including listening and following direction.
Work as a member of a team.
Preference will be given to candidates aged 15-30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program through Service Canada, however candidates outside of this age range will be considered and are encouraged to apply.
Hours of Work
These positions start on June 24, 2024 and ends on August 25, 2024, subject to enrolment and funding. Typical hours of work, which are subject to enrolment and funding, consist of : three positions at 35 hours per week;
two positions at 10 hours per week; and, several casual, on-call opportunities to cover absences and peak periods.
Salary
These temporary opportunities are non-union, and are compensated at $30.81 per hour (2024 rate), which is $26.29 per hour plus 6% pay in lieu of vacation, 6% pay In lieu of benefits and 5.
2% pay in lieu of statutory holidays. A head lifeguard will be appointed based qualifications, skills, and experience and will be compensated at $32.
19 per hour (2024 rate), which is $27.47 per hour plus 6% pay in lieu of vacation, 6% pay in lieu of benefits and 5.2% pay in lieu of statutory holidays.
