About the role
As an Education & Engagement Representative, you will report to the Managing Director of Member Engagement & Growth and will be responsible for the planning and execution of all educational member programs and outreach events.
You will also play a key role in managing both internal and external stakeholder relationships (member-led committees, community organizations, political offices.
The goal of this role will be to engage union members beyond the bargaining process, by facilitating training opportunities to empower members and connecting our membership with community and policy matters that reflect UFCW 1518’s values and priorities.
Here’s what you can expect to dig into in this exciting, hands-on role :
Key Responsibilities
Lead the execution of the union’s member development programming, in particular Education Month : Develop and implement member training schedules and curriculum, working in collaboration with Union Representatives or other subject matter experts.
Ensure curriculum alignment with member development goals and priorities.Coordinate with different departments involved : Member Representation, Communications, Administration, etc.
Coordinate and prepare course facilitators.
- Manage event planning and execution of member engagement & outreach events for the year ( Lobby Day, bargaining conferences).
- Coordinate member-led committees of the union ( Indigenous Committee) and labour council member representatives, to ensure alignment with union values and priorities.
- Identify and coordinate member development opportunities provided by external labour and other associated organizations ( labour councils, CLC’s Winter School).
- Develop and nurture relationships with external stakeholders ( community organizations, Ministerial offices, labour councils).
- Represent the union at meetings or events of partner community organizations.
- Work with the Managing Director to develop and implement the union’s legislative goals in member engagement initiatives ( Lobby Day).
- Provide training, support, and management of rank-and-file members booked off for events or special campaigns ( GOTV for upcoming provincial election).
- Work closely with Union Representatives during internal organizing campaigns of disengaged units.
- Collaborate with the Communications department to develop materials for training programs or engagement opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Organizing and Representation departments to develop member engagement opportunities outside of the bargaining process.
- Prepare written quarterly reports to measure the success of member engagement initiatives.
Qualifications and other Requirements :
- 3+ years of event planning experience, with strong project management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated experience developing training materials / educational curriculum preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship building and collaboration skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience working with social justice organizations (within unions, community organizations or politics).
- Knowledge of labour unions and general political context in BC.
- Stellar computer literacy skills including, proficiency with Microsoft software (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and SharePoint), digital communication tools (Zoom, email, etc) and other mainstream programs (like Adobe Pro).
- Superior organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills that allow you to work accurately and efficiently when given tight turnaround times.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently while maintaining accountability.
- Able and flexible to travel across the province and work irregular hours.
- A commitment to social, racial, gender and economic justice.
- Valid class 5 driving license.
- Fluency in a second language (in particular, Punjabi) is an asset.

Compensation Range : $63,500 to $97,500
In addition to your salary, you will be eligible to participate in UFCW 1518’s health and dental benefits package (subject to standard waiting times), mileage reimbursement and a chance to work with a collaborative team in the office!
