DESCRIPTION :

The Library at UBC’s Okanagan campus invites applications from creative, service-orientedlibrarians who excel at leading diverse teams and arecommitted to supporting transformative student learning experiences and research excellence for a full-time ongoing position as the Head, Teaching Partnerships and Public Services.

Reporting to the Deputy University Librarian, Okanagan Campus, this position is responsible forproviding intellectual and administrative leadership for their unit contributing to the development of lasting, innovative, and responsive teaching and public services that position the Library as a vital resource for the campus, and its diverse stakeholders, now and into the future.

The Head will be a member of a team that is responsible for the daily operational management of the UBC Okanagan Library, and ensures that the development of the services and policies meet the needs of faculty, students, and staff.

The Head, representing their Teaching Partnerships and Public Services unit, provides input into the strategic and budgetary planning of the Okanagan Library to ensure that targets and goals are reasonable.

They also provide input into the delivery and assessment of Library services, and may act as the committee delegate of the Deputy University Librarian, Okanagan Campus as necessary.

The Head will work collaboratively in a consultative environment, and lead and adapt to changes in the Okanagan Library's organization and operational model.

The nature and scope of the responsibilities for this position are expected to change as the Okanagan Library’s organizational and strategic needs evolve.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the Okanagan Library’s Teaching Partnerships and Public Services.

Situated within this portfolio are the teams responsible for :

  • Learning and Curriculum Support, which designs, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates information literacy programs and services that support transformative learning objectives;
  • Public Services, which includes reference services and outreach, a variety of campus collaborations including the Student Learning Hub, makerspace UBCO, the Inclusive Technology Lab;

and the UBC Innovation Library located in downtown Kelowna.

As a manager-practitioner, the incumbent will also participate actively in the delivery of library services including reference, teaching, faculty liaison, and collection development.

The area(s) will be assigned at the discretion of the Deputy University Librarian, Okanagan Campus and in consultation with the Head.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

Masters-level degree from an accredited program of library, information science, or equivalent internationally accredited program or a masters-level degree with a specialization or concentration in archival science.

Leadership, management, and supervisory experience in an academic library.

Experience teaching in an information literacy instruction program.

Experience providing general and in-depth reference and research consultations.

Experience working collegially with a diverse population of colleagues and / or users in keeping with the .

Demonstrated ability to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.

Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility (EDIA) and reconciliation.

Experience incorporating EDIA and reconciliation into overall professional practice.

Demonstrated ability to develop, assess and refine library services or facilities.

Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan and carry out projects as a member of a team.

Demonstrated ability to lead committees or working groups.

Demonstrated ability to consult with others and incorporate learned knowledge.

Evidence of excellent, professional written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to respond to and give constructive feedback.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS :

UBC Okanagan Library emphasizes that the preferred skills and qualifications are not required and that we are committed to helping and supporting our future colleague develop these preferred skills and qualifications as needed.

Knowledge of public services (reference and outreach) practices, policies, and procedures in an academic library.

Demonstrated ability to inspire innovation, and experience developing and motivating teams and individuals.

A track record of developing innovative, long-range academic or community programs and carrying out objectives.

An academic background or professional experience in relevant subject areas.

Experience in or knowledge of assessment activities to support continuous improvement of library services that enhance student learning, engagement, and retention.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT AND SALARY :

This position will be filled as a full-time, ongoing General Librarian position with a five-year renewable administrative term as Head, Teaching Partnerships and Public Services.

If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there will be an initial three-year probationary appointment.

Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of the appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment.

This position is anticipated to be filled at an annual starting gross salary of between $10, to $12, monthly ($130,000 to $154,000 per annum equivalent) plus administrative stipend and benefits.

Exact salary will be commensurate with experience and academic / professional qualifications. All candidates will be considered regardless of years of experience if they meet the required qualifications.

The successful candidate will be a member of The University of British Columbia Faculty Association and the terms and conditions of appointment are governed by the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty Association ().

The anticipated start date will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate.
